Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Orchestra, jazz-rock-latin and funk big band, "A Total Show" - brings their high energy and diverse big band to energize the Royal, top NW musicians and an exciting show!
Tacoma-based trumpeter Rich Wetzel is well known as a powerful and high-energy lead player and high-note specialist. His playing has received accolades from no less an authority than trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron, and his name appears on Arturo Sandoval’s list of influential trumpet players.
A much in-demand section leader, Rich has played for such national acts as The Four Tops, the Temptations, the Spinners, the Coasters and the Platters, Rich also leads many of his own projects, including the Blue Moon Howlers, a sensational swing, jazz and R&B revue and the Groovin’ Higher Orchestra, a powerful 15-piece big band that brings the classic music of legendary leaders like Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Buddy Rich back to life.
Wetzel says, “This group is my dream band, the one I have dreamed of having all my life.”

Thanks Lorree, definitely fun time and as a jazz rock fusion show depending on the venue, sometimes that is a bit of a challenge, but all in all was really a fun night and we did our best to balance things while being true to the music and fit the room as best as possible. We all really loved the venue too, the lighting and nice atmoshpere and wonderful live music fans and all the cool folks of Olympia Jazz Central, thanks again everyone, really a fun show!

Superb players, all! I especially enjoyed Craig Hoyer... as always... and vocals by Steve and Danielle. Since I am a "volume nazi", I would say that it was too hot for the Royal and by the end of the night I had to resort to tissue wads in my ears. But the band is great!
