Route updated 7/11/2014
Back by popular demand!
This year, I'll be leading the group on a scenic ride through the Loess Hills to visit the Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Museum and Parlor in Le Mars, IA.
HEADING NORTH (~124 Miles) (Google Maps Route)
For those who would like to join us for breakfast, we'll meet up at Henry's Diner in Crescent, IA to fill our bellies before filling our gas tanks.
After breakfast, we'll gather at Casey's General Store for the official start of the ride (gas-up the bikes, take pre-trip photos, select a "sweeper", and get a pre-ride briefing) with kickstands up at ~9:45 a..m.
Drive through Pisgah, IA.
Stop at Murray Hill Scenic Overlook to stretch our legs and take a few pictures for about 1/2 hour.
Arrive at Onawa to get gas at Casey's General Store for those who need to refill their tanks.
Arrive at Bob's Drive In ("Home of the Bob dog" that was aired on Diners, Dives & Drive Ins) for a quick lunch before we head over to the Wells Blue Bunny Museum for ice cream.
We'll head to the Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor and Museum.
HEADING SOUTH (~143 Miles) (Google Maps Route)
We'll depart from Le Mars and double back on Hwy 75.
About 8 miles south of Sioux City, we'll make our second fuel stop at Casey's General Store in Merrill. From there we'll ride through South Sioux City and take Hwy 75 back home on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River.
Around 60 miles and another hour later (about 3 miles north of Decatur), we'll stop at the Blackbird Overlook to stretch out and enjoy the scenery. After that, we'll roll on into Decatur.
Stop at Pop-N-Docs Marina for a drink, a snack and most likely some live entertainment.
We'll make our final fuel stop right in Decatur on our way out of town. However, since Hwy 75 is being worked-on between Decatur and Tekamah, we will take Rte 175 East out of town and jump on I-29 South (the tool booth is closed, so crossing the bridge is now free!). We'll drop off I-29 at the Blair/Missouri Valley exit (#75) then head south through Blair and Fort Calhoun back to Omaha.
We should be back in Omaha around this time where we will meet at Cubby's to say our farewells and make sure everyone made it back to Omaha safely (with the exception of those who decided to break-off from the group early).
The round trip should be around 267 miles and take about 10 hours. If anyone wants to break off any time during the day it's an easy blast home on I-29. However, if anyone has to break off early, please let me and our "sweeper" know ahead of time so we can keep the bike and rider counts accurate. I wouldn't want to lose anyone along the route!
If the weather is not going to cooperate with us for the ride on Saturday, July 26th, I will reschedule the ride for Sunday, July 27th.; that is, unless the weather is going to be bad all weekend. In that case, I reserve the right to cancel the ride altogether or to reschedule the ride for the next Saturday, August 2nd. We'll have to see how everything works-out as the time for the ride draws near. The point is that I really want this ride to happen, but I want it to be safe, too!
