2nd Annual Ice Cream Ride - Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor & Museum, Le Mars, Iowa

This is the July 2014 Ride.  If you're looking for the July 2015 ride, click here.

Route updated 7/11/2014

Back by popular demand!

This year, I'll be leading the group on a scenic ride through the Loess Hills to visit the Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Museum and Parlor in Le Mars, IA.

HEADING NORTH (~124 Miles) (Google Maps Route)

8:00 a.m.:
For those who would like to join us for breakfast, we'll meet up at Henry's Diner in Crescent, IA to fill our bellies before filling our gas tanks.

9:30 a.m.:
After breakfast, we'll gather at Casey's General Store for the official start of the ride (gas-up the bikes, take pre-trip photos, select a "sweeper", and get a pre-ride briefing) with kickstands up at ~9:45 a..m.

10:15 a.m.:
Drive through Pisgah, IA.

10:30 a.m.:
Stop at Murray Hill Scenic Overlook to stretch our legs and take a few pictures for about 1/2 hour.

11:30 a.m.:
Arrive at Onawa to get gas at Casey's General Store for those who need to refill their tanks.

1:00 p.m.:
Arrive at Bob's Drive In ("Home of the Bob dog" that was aired on Diners, Dives & Drive Ins) for a quick lunch before we head over to the Wells Blue Bunny Museum for ice cream.

2:00 p.m.
We'll head to the Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor and Museum.

HEADING SOUTH (~143 Miles) (Google Maps Route)

3:00 p.m.
We'll depart from Le Mars and double back on Hwy 75.

3:30 p.m.
About 8 miles south of Sioux City, we'll make our second fuel stop at Casey's General Store in Merrill. From there we'll ride through South Sioux City and take Hwy 75 back home on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River.

4:30 p.m.
Around 60 miles and another hour later (about 3 miles north of Decatur), we'll stop at the Blackbird Overlook to stretch out and enjoy the scenery. After that, we'll roll on into Decatur.

5:00 p.m.
Stop at Pop-N-Docs Marina for a drink, a snack and most likely some live entertainment.

6:00 p.m.
We'll make our final fuel stop right in Decatur on our way out of town.  However, since Hwy 75 is being worked-on between Decatur and Tekamah, we will take Rte 175 East out of town and jump on I-29 South (the tool booth is closed, so crossing the bridge is now free!).  We'll drop off I-29 at the Blair/Missouri Valley exit (#75) then head south through Blair and Fort Calhoun back to Omaha.

~7:30 p.m.
We should be back in Omaha around this time where we will meet at Cubby's to say our farewells and make sure everyone made it back to Omaha safely (with the exception of those who decided to break-off from the group early).

The round trip should be around 267 miles and take about 10 hours. If anyone wants to break off any time during the day it's an easy blast home on I-29. However, if anyone has to break off early, please let me and our "sweeper" know ahead of time so we can keep the bike and rider counts accurate. I wouldn't want to lose anyone along the route!

***NOTE***NOTE***NOTE***NOTE***NOTE***NOTE***
If the weather is not going to cooperate with us for the ride on Saturday, July 26th, I will reschedule the ride for Sunday, July 27th.; that is, unless the weather is going to be bad all weekend. In that case, I reserve the right to cancel the ride altogether or to reschedule the ride for the next Saturday, August 2nd. We'll have to see how everything works-out as the time for the ride draws near. The point is that I really want this ride to happen, but I want it to be safe, too!

Nice video. Glad that van didn't rear-end the car which was turning. Could have pushed the car into your lane of travel.

Chock up another great ride. With the reception of the light rain we had north of Sioux City, it went very well! I'm really glad everyone enjoyed the trip and can't wait for the next one. Thanks to everyone for joining me on the ride. It was a pleasure leading you all!

so did you guys make the ride today? If not are you going to try Sunday.

The weather map between now and about 10:30 am is clear, so I'm going to head up to Henry's for breakfast. If anyone else would like to join me and discuss today's ride - whether we go today or delay it until tomorrow - we can make the determination over breakfast. See you shortly!

Looks like there's a 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms all day tomorrow between Omaha and Sioux City. Now, I don't know if that means we'll get wet riding up or back, but if the forecast doesn't change and the weather map shows a good indication of rain along our route, I'm going to reschedule the ride to our first backup date of this Sunday. I'll send another update in the morning with my determination, so keep your computer or phone on so you'll get the updates. :-)

What happens when we get to blue bunny? Is there a tour our just eat ice cream.

    July 25, 2014

    • Charles J C.

The place is two stories. On the first story is the gift shop and the ice cream parlor. On the second story is a "museum" consisting of glass cases with old Blue Bunny memorabilia and pictures on the walls. There are also more tables and chairs which can be used to enjoy your ice cream desserts. There's no tour per se and the factory itself no longer has public tours.

Robert, welcome to the group! We always have a good time on our rides and we stop plenty of times to stretch our legs and socialize. Even the first time my wife and I rode with this group, we had a lot of fun. See you Saturday!!!

Sorry, I just encountered a work conflict and I will not be able to make this ride. I hope it goes well for everyone that attends.

I've updated the route and times above. Please note that all times are "guestimates" based on my ride up-and-back this past Wednesday and by using Google Maps. Expect this ride to take all day considering the number of stops for gas and photo opportunities.

Good idea have a safe ride!

A couple guys with whom I used to work and I are doing a pre-trip ride this Wednesday (July 9th). If anyone would like to join us, drop me a line ([masked]) so I can make sure we don't leave anyone behind who may wish to ride with us.

We'll be starting at the Casey's in Crescent, Iowa at 9:30am with kickstands up at 9:40am - just like the actual ride.

Since this is a pre-trip ride, I don't know what the roads will be like, yet, so we may have to adjust our route as we go. Please be prepared for unexpected U-Turns! :-)
