October Discussion - "Orange Is the New Black" by Piper Kerman

Have you seen the addictive Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black? Did you know that it was based (somewhat loosely) on a memoir by the real Piper?

Our book for October, Orange Is the New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison, is a New York Times bestseller. Here's the description from Amazon: "With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187–424—one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kerman’s story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison—why it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when they’re there."

I'm bummed...I'm not going to be able to make it this time. I have a kiddo's birthday party to go to at the same time. Can't miss her princess party :) I'll see everyone in November! Pick a good book for next time!

I had seen this on Netflix but didn't know what it was about so I didn't venture to watch it nor did I know it was a book (some library employee I am). Now I am kicking myself for both reasons. I am loving the book (3/4 of the way done) and totally in love with the show (only seen 5 episodes though). Can't wait to meet everyone next week.

Looking forward to meeting you, Stacy! We picked this book because several of us got sucked into the Netflix series, and I had read about half the book before our last meeting. Should be an interesting discussion!

Hated the book - loved, loved LOVED the show. Go figure. That never happens! I don't usually like memoirs - they often read like fiction (hello A Million Little Pieces!!). I won't be able to come as I'm running my first marathon in Chicago that day. But I miss seeing you guys and hope to be with you in November. Cheers!

Good luck in the marathon!! I didn't hate the book, but didn't like it as much as the show - also unusual for me.
