Lovecraft, party of ??.

This go round we have decided to push the meets back to monthly to give some of the members who participate absentia the opportunity to come join the corporeal fun.

We haven't really done a horror selection yet, so I voted for Lovecraft and won. Probably only really won because I get to schedule the meets.....

Aaaanyway. The book I am personally reading is "H.P. Lovecraft; the Complete Collection."(Amazon kindle store $3.00) With all of the options out there we decided to just find a book of Lovecraft's stories and read it. There will surely be selections that are in all of the books, so it doesn't have to be the same book as everyone else.

And I already have received word that if i would just get the next meet scheduled that Don has a selection to share for downloadyness.

Nothing new to report, weather continues as usual, I would really really really really like to see some of our phantom members able to make the next meeting.  Really really. No pressure folks, but the regulars are quite a dynamic group and the conversation is never boring.....

Well, having reduced myself not as far as begging, but almost to a full on wheedle....

Book on!

For those from the meetup who wanted to know, on www.couchtuner.eu, the Doctor Who season you want to start with is Season 1, episode 1, as it starts with only the modern Doctors there

I'm getting further behind watching/reading stuff all the time. Not sure where the Doctor is going to wind up on the priorities list but I'll get to it eventually. I'll try to watch at least a few episodes before the next meetup, though, so I can throw in a few comments about it. Thanks Clyde. :)

Welcome to Bookworms Robert. :) I just want to say first that we share an interest in Alternative Energy, etc. I have a 10 acre piece of land that I will be putting some kind of building on and experimentally powering a few things with solar. So far I just have a 50 watt panel, a couple of marine batteries and a 1200 watt inverter to tinker with but they are producing power. :) After I get a building on the land I hope to try a bit larger system. As for Lovecraft, I am definitely not a fan of archaic writing. Reminds me far too much of A Tale of Two Cities. Yuk. ;P

For all the Doc Who fans, I should mention a site that Clyde brought to my attention. It has not only 7 seasons of Doctor Who episodes but many other things of interest as well. (Like Alphas, Being Human, Haven, Dexter, Warehouse 13 and etc.) The URL is:

Thanks Clyde. :) It's a little tricky to get it to let me download (my connection is too slow for real time watching) but I think I can make it work.

Hope you are still going to make it tonight Jane. You've been awfully quiet lately. This one looks to be a bundle of fun...even if it is supposed to be about Lovecraft. :P

I'd offer you a ride but I hate driving so I'm going with my sister. You have a lot of trouble with that truck. Isn't there a bus run close to there?

not sure, but after 6, the night bus route lets out like 2 blocks from My current apartment, kinda troublesome, in actuality, I'm not that far from the meetup, looks liike 7 blocks or so, so I might go and then walk home, if I'm going to walk 2 blocks from the bus station anyway, we'll see

Hi! Me and my gf love books and were this page caught our interests. How does one go about attending one of these events and such? Can we just show up? Do we need to do something formal first? Do we need to read some lovecraft or w/e book is the topic of discussion? (Ive never been in a book club so I don't know the rules. hehe)

Good to know, Amber, thanks. Also, um, hi bookworms! I have no idea whether I'll have time to read any Lovecraft before Thursday, but I'd like to come anyway. Did Lovecraft write any short stories?

Hi Michelle. Do come chat with us. :) Most of Lovecraft's writing seems to be short stories, actually. Here is a PDF file I posted previously including several of them. http://www.mediafire....

I tend to prefer modern SF and Fantasy to Horror myself. :)

All right Blue! Glad to see that you are joining us. I hope the weather is bad that day so you won't be tempted to go camping or something. :P

I managed to wade through a couple of stories from the Lovecraft collection I put up. My first (and final) impression can be summed up in four words: Dull. Boring. Archaic. Stilted. I can appreciate some of the spinoffs that come from it--such as the use of the deity Cthulhu in D&D--but the actual stories are sadly lacking in interest. Not surprising, I suppose, considering that I have never liked horror. :P I would say further, though, that--even if I were interested in horror--I probably wouldn't be interested in Lovecraft. In my mind they completely fail to accomplish the adrenaline rush of fear that seems to be the ultimate, and only, point of books in the horror genre.

    Wouldn't you agree Clyde? <big grin>

I am a fan of some old style writing (Nevil Shute for examle) but very little horror (house on haunted hill), waded almost through the first story in this collection and agree more with Don. I can see the good parts, but it just never quite pulls together....

Dr. Who ? I see some comments: watched daily during the reign of Tom Baker (it was perfect time for a break when I was at school, not sure if they were re-runs or yet... that was a while ago) but did care for the next one and quit watching....

And, by the way, we HAVE done a horror selection as October Country qualifies, even though it isn't something Bradbury writes a lot of. :P

I'll just be in the corner being quietly dynamic. :P

Or they can continue to let us have all the fun, I guess. Here is the PDF file of Lovecraft stuff I found:

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
