(Cycling) Reading Group

Drafters,

During these off-season (for some of us!) months, let's stay connected to each other, to cycling, and to La Cocina (maybe) by reading and discussing a book or two about cycling.

The second selection in our series is "The Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance," by David Herlihy. The book offers "a riveting tale of tragedy, pride, and naivete that is both brilliantly told and meticulously researched. Opinions may differ as to whether Lenz was unaware or unconcerned by the inherent dangers he faced, but the story of his fateful journey belongs on the varied shelves of cycling enthusiasts, mystery fans, and nonfiction devotees alike" (Amazon review).

We will meet at Pat's house in Raleigh. (Address was sent to those who RSVP'd. Send message to Lisa if you need Pat's address.)

So, much is still to be decided; but we do now have a book and a date and time, so you can start reading over the holidays!

(edited) message sent to the group with discussion topics:

    1) How does the topic of 'sponsorship' figure in to this story? What's the role of the sponsor? How does sponsorship then compare to sponsorship now?
    2) How did the rides between Sachtleben/Allen and Lenz compare to each other -- geographically, culturally, psychologically, socially?
    3) These rides certainly were (and still would be) considered 'extreme." What motivates people to engage in extreme activities like this? What motivated Lenz? What motivated Sachtleben/Allen?
    4) Do you consider Lenz a diplomat/attache/ambassador? Or was he an irresponsible renegade? Or something else?
    5) A lot of resources went in to finding what happened to Lenz. Why were so many people (US government, missionaries, sponsors, cyclists) willing to invest so much into figuring out what happened to Lenz?
    6) How does Lenz present "the other"? How does the author present "the other"?
    7) Did this book make you want to travel on your bicycle? To where?

FYI ... The $35 New Bern fee increases by $10 on Feb 1. Last time I checked, $10 will buy a few Blue Moons.

I bought the only copy at B&N at Mt Moriah Rd last night. Don't know how long it will take them to restock it.
I'm about 20 pages into it, and it seems to have a lot of potential.

I have a hard time getting started on this book. I might have to show up and hear the discussions before I decide whether or not to read it! ;-)
