Spring (Wheelchair) Stroll

Hey peeps - We're back out hitting the pavement with the Fireside residents (and their wheelchairs).  You know you love it, and you know how special it is for the residents to get outside and not only get some fresh air and sunshine, but some conversation and comaraderie as well.  We'll head down to the mall - er - Santa Monica Place and see if there's any music goin' on then we'll head back (probably along Palisades Park/Ocean Ave.).  I think we'll try Barney's Beanery afterwards (if there isn't a long wait) so if you're paying for parking figure in another hour or so :)

Event Description

This is a great event for the residents and the volunteers...  Always good energy, and fun being out on the Promenade. *Don't sign up unless you can be there as we don't want to leave any of the residents that were anticipating going behind*

"Fireside has a great need for volunteers at their small and intimate community.   Many of their finest activities happen because of the tremendous support that is received from within the community, and quite a few of the volunteers who come to Fireside develop long lasting relationships with the residents.  Having these kinds of activities helps to promote a sense of well being and belonging...  Not only is it good for the residents, it's just as wonderful for the volunteers!"

What we'll be doing

We'll be taking residents out in their wheelchairs for a stroll along the Promenade on 3rd St.  You will not only be helping to keep these residents active, but (more importantly) improving morale as well.  It's nice to interact with the residents and spread a little One Brick sunshine :)

Parking... It can be frustrating so leave time for that. Recommended spot is the public garage at[masked]th St. - "Structure 9".  You can Google it and see it on street view (the entrance is between 2 structures).  It's about a 10 or so min. walk from the garage to Fireside.  The first 2 hours are free and then $1 each additional 30 mins.  There is street parking according to Howard, but I know last time people were having a hard time finding any!  Here's some info. 'bout the parking:

You can also park further down by Pallisades and Alta, but leave about 15 mins or so to walk over to Fireside (it's a nice walk and goes quickly).

Thanks for supporting One Brick, and Fireside!

Thank you to all the volunteers that participated at yesterday's Wheelchair Stroll event at Fireside Convalescent Hospital in Santa Monica! Even though the weather was on the cool side, it was great to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and street artists with the residents. This event means a lot to the residents and is only possible because of volunteers like you.

Can a 15 year old volunteer?

    • Mary G.

Actually, the minimum age for One Brick volunteers is 18 due to One Brick's liability insurance... Sorry, Ana! There are lots of volunteer orgs out there where this isn't an issue, however. Great that you're volunteering!

So, just let me know. I tried it once and there were too many volunteers and not enough residents. So, maybe this time!

Hi Blythe! The nice thing about having more volunteers than residents is that the extra volunteers can chat with the residents. Also, the volunteers can trade off strolling. Generally, I try to keep it to one volunteer for every resident, though. We try to have this event every month so keep checking the OB calendar! Thanks for supporting One Brick! :)
