Thanks again for volunteering for our event with Much Love Rescue. Below are some notes from Much Love but first some notes from One Brick.

  • If you are joining us for lunch at the Farmers Market (yum!), meet us in front of the library at Ocean Park and Main at 11:00 am.
  • If you are skipping lunch, meet us at the same library at 11:50.
  • Bill's cellphone # is 310 699 6323 if there are any questions or concerns.
  • If your plans have changed and you won't be able to make it, please cancel your RSVP so that someone on the wait list can move up.

Look forward to seeing you Sunday,

Skim the material below. We will go over most of it during the orientation.

Greetings, and thank you for signing up to attend our next New Volunteer Orientation with Much Love Animal Rescue!

Just a reminder, the orientation will begin promptly at 12:00 at our Santa Monica adoption location (2515 Main Street). We are in the parking lot of Lost Planet production studios, just north of the intersection of Ocean Park & Main Street. Parking is available on-street or in several metered public lots in the area. You might want to bring extra change to feed the meters.

So far the weather report looks good for Sunday! However, if it looks like another rainy day, we will email cancellation notices by 9am on Sunday (don't hesitate to call Bill to confirm we are on) .

Orientation will be followed by training with our more senior staff members for the rest of the afternoon until we wrap it all up at about 3:30pm. Be sure to dress comfortably with closed toe shoes as you will have the opportunity to work directly with our animals.

Note, due to our insurance policies and general safety, all Much Love Volunteers who work our weekend adoption events must be 18 years of age or older.

Volunteer Portal: Weekend Adoption Signup (don't worry about for this week):

We have a simple system. Each week an email goes out as a call for volunteers. Following the sign-up directions below, you can pick a day or shift and sign-up to volunteer, transport as well, or even just to transport. If you are transporting, feel free to add your general location and we can try to arrange a task that is convenient to you. We will give you detailed instructions for using the portal after Sunday's orientation.

Emails you may get from Much Love:

Contact info: You'll receive most of the Much Love emails from this address,. PLEASE ADD THIS EMAIL ADDRESS TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. Otherwise you might find all the announcements will end up in your spam box. If you are signed up for an event and something comes up, be sure to contact the lead volunteer for that day (will be on an email titled "Assignment List")

Emails you will get will include:

Weekend Adoption Signup Reminder
Just as it sounds. It's just a reminder to signup along with a link to the signup portal. If there are any special notes about time or location changes, this email will contain them.

Animals in Our Care:
Mid-week you'll get an email with all the animals we currently care for. It's good to get a feel for the animals at the upcoming adoptions. And if you are interested in dog walking, it will tell you the locations of the animals.

Assignment List:
On Friday, we put together a detailed assignment list for the weekend adoptions based on the feedback in the volunteer portal. This will include who is volunteering, who is the lead volunteer for a given day, and transport assignments.

Volunteer Meetings (optional):

Each month or so, we hold a general volunteer meeting at a volunteers house. You'll get an RSVP email as a reminder to see if you are interested in attending.

There are a number of factors to consider with the adoptions: we need to keep it safe for all volunteers, attendees, and the animals. We also need to be do what we can to keep the locations offering their spaces for us to hold the weekend adoptions. And while we're not all trainers, we work with the animals to make them show off how adoptable they are, by reinforcing positive behavior through praise and making them well adjusted even before they find a forever home.

Lead Volunteer Checklist:
This is something the Lead Volunteers use to make sure everything gets setup and done correctly at an adoption. But even if you're not a lead, it helps to know. So take a look and soon enough, you'll show up at an adoption and know exactly what needs to be setup and how things are done. You can always simply ask the lead, but reading the checklist is just a way for you to get a look in the inner circle of how things are done.

Quick Reminders:

* Make sure you are wearing a name tag
* Be courteous and polite with potential adopters, fosters and those donating
* Remember & discuss all the ways to help Much Love animals: Adopting, Fostering, Volunteering, Donations
* Be sure to thank those donating to Much Love

* Lead volunteer needs to review all applications to discuss the answers on the application with the applicant.

* Be safe, on alert, with a firm grasp of the leash when walking dogs in and outside of adoption sites

* Leashes on dogs at all times
* No food in the pen
* No dog toys in the pen
* Always have a bucket of water inside pen

* Volunteers need to ask the Lead or senior volunteer what combination of dogs can be lose in the pen

* If someone is filling out an application, offer them a Much Love chair
* If all Much Love chairs are being used other volunteers, a volunteer should surrender their chair for the applicant
* (Sundays) Politely remind courtesy shows to remain in designated area (back parking lot)
* (Sundays) If a car parks in parking lot, check if they are there for Lost Planet (Much Love visitors need to be asked to park elsewhere)

Weekend Adoption Protocols (attached PDF):
This is a bit longer form a document. But it was put together some time ago with great detail to just describe how the adoption event process works.

That's plenty for now. And always remember that you have a number of people to ping questions off of, present new ideas to. We're a 100% volunteer organization, so your gift of volunteering your time and even proposing new ideas is greatly appreciated.

See you all Sunday!
