OMN London and Adobe - 16th February 2012 - Brands as Online Publishers

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi Everyone

It’s party time! OMN London brings you a Social Media Week special in conjunction with Adobe.

Details:

OMN London is back for 2012 with an evening of digital discussions and free drinks on deck sponsored by Adobe aboard HMS President on the 16th February. The topic for this round of OMN London is “Brands as Publishers” and will be discussing the fact that due to the growing number of easily accessible channels to media available to brands they now have to think like publishers. Brands are no longer advertising, they are truly communicating with their audiences in real-time. This is a seismic shift in the marketing landscape and one that I’m looking forward to hearing our speakers talking about.

First confirmed speaker of the evening is Bafta and Emmy award winning content, digital and media specialist Nick Cohen, Managing Partner & UK Head of Mediacom Beyond Advertising.

We’ve also got Mark Johnstone from Distilled, the brains behind this amazing piece of content, speaking about using creativity to get results through quality content.

Opening the night will be a Simon Morris, Director, Marketing EMEA from Adobe who will be getting the huge VIP treatment that he deserves as bar sponsors for the evening!

We’ll be holding this on HMS President, which is one of the permanently moored ships on Victoria Embankment, and a fantastic venue. There’s a bar on board, so everyone will be able to refresh themselves suitably throughout the evening.

I’m a firm believer in the premise of the more the merrier, so please help us to grow this group by spreading the word using the #OMNLONDON hashtag.

I look forward to seeing you all on the 16th Feb!

I strongly disagree with that comment. I thought both presentations were very good!

I thought the subject raised more questions than were tackled in the presentations but it is a meet-up not a conference so that's OK. Maybe the meetup should have been called Brands as onboard Publicans - thanks Adobe :-)

Different strokes for different folks I guess, and fundamentally I want to say thanks to Gus & Co for setting these up as I know from experience it takes a lot of effort.
Some prefer the networking side above the talks and visa versa. For my two pence the previous two I attended including the one before last on ZMOT would be what I would describe as perfect as there were two key note speakers each doing presentations of 35mins or so each. I am in the camp that prefers longer presentations!

Agree with Andrea & Simon, it was a complete disappointment specially the presentations. More of a drinking frenzy than a networking event but kudos to the organiser for still making it a success. Personally, I'd be skeptical about attending any further events with this meetup.

I thought the event was very good. The presentations were interesting and gave a lot of food for thought. It is difficult to gauge the expertise of any audience when presenting like this and I think it was a good overview. I enjoyed talking SEO afterwards and will attend future events.

I understand peoples comments about the presentations however I think that they were short and were aimed to be more thought provoking rather than insightful. Location was great and thanks to adobe for increasing the tab at the bar. Will attend future events. If I missed you and you walk to talk Digital get me via

My 2 pence worth of feedback from my first meetup: If it?s a networking event, then the venue should be more networking-friendly, it was pretty crowded (but still a nice venue). If there are going to be speakers sharing knowledge, perhaps indicate the level of the discussion as there are various levels of experience in the room so the content needs to be targeted, especially for well-seasoned marketers. Basically cater to the exact needs of the audience. I hope this feedback is constructive! And

The growth of OMN is great to see, there are far to few regular events in london - so great work Gus.
To speakers and presentations - 2 points.
    1) As a speaker you have to consider your audience, there will be rookies, seasoned pro's, people with great experience of PR or offline marketing, a diversity that means your presentation won't please all.
    2) As an attendee you'll actually get the nitty gritty nuggets of knowledge far more often at the bar chatting socially.
    Great event!

Too many people, overcrowded, but overall a good evening with lots of colleagues from the biggest agencies in London. Presentations weren't that inspiring, but this isn't a conference so we can't expect a lot more. Thanks for Adobe UK and all the organisers. Looking forward to see how the next OMN will be..

There's a lot of over-the-top negativity about the event I think. If you want conference quality presentations, pay a few hundred quid and go to SES next week, you won't be disappointed. By contrast, this was free.

The speakers were prepared to speak informally to a small number of people, not hundreds packed into a wedding venue. Its a bit harsh to slag them off.

Also, it was free. With lots of free booze. Did I mention that?
It was a good event, and I'm looking forward to the next.

I agree with Shaun. Not just because I work with him but also because he is right. Even if you didn't enjoy the presentations its great to have the opportunities to hear people talk/meet people in the industry etc all for free. Cheers to OMN and the speakers for using their time to put these events on.

Personally I loved it. Not because Manifest were a sponsor, or there was a free bar, or because Gus is the best dressed man in London, but because it's a hugely generous FREE event that needs to cater to over 500 people from different companies and with different wants from an event, and they did it bloody well. Oh, and it's ON A BOAT.

I'll third Shaun's comments. As a networking event I thought the balance of meet time and presentation time was good.

This is not organiser bashing (great job BTW) but generally I do think the sponsors need to take on board some of the points esp. as the event will reflect their brand. My impression is that the sponsors wanted to hit influencers & budget holders, so their content needs to be water tight. I don?t think their sweet spot audience is always concerned with free alcohol, worth taking note if sponsors have invested time and money that could possibly materialise into lots of a great leads!

Guys - it was great to meet so many people in digital. It's a great industry to be in at the moment, so who cares if the venue was too crowded or the presentations weren't as expected for some - we got to hang out, have a drink and meet a lot of likeminded individuals for the night. For free. Thanks for organising, Gus!

Another great night! Thanks so much to everyone who attended. I've taken onboard the comments here about the length and depth of the talks and will bear this in mind for next time. As OMNLDN is a free event, open to everyone who's digitally interested, and focused on online marketing as a whole, rather than a specific discipline, it means that the scope of experience and knowledge within the room is huge. This makes it impossible to cater for all the people in the audience all the time, but I think that its one of best things about this group as it's by chatting to people with different viewpoints that we can learn and grow our collective skills as online marketers. Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Cheers, Gus.

Given the amount of feedback in my inbox after another day at SMW, i would suggest that a proper post event feedback survey is conducted after an event like this in the interest of continual improvement. Having said that, great event, good connections made and a good time had. All the best! A

It was my very first meet up with OMNLDN and Adobe. I have to say it was very overcrowded, but from what I could hear standing way in the back, the two presentations were good and afterwards I did meet a couple of interesting people. Because of this fact, I will still go to future OMNLDN events and fingers crossed they won't be so packed.
  • Shaun Myandee
Great fun, met a lot of interesting, like minded people. The talks might not have been great, but I can forgive that, as the speakers clearly weren't prepared for such a huge audience. Plus it was free, with free alcohol and great company in the bar afterwards. What's not to like?

  • Rachel Naylor
The presentations were really lacking in substance, I know it is difficult with such a wide audience but I don't think anyone there was satisfied with the content. The Distilled one was particularly airy.
  • Farzad
Pretty good opportunity to network. The speeches were kept short. The alcohol generously kept flowing. Good first time experience.
  • Oriana Lauria
I was expecting some more presentations and some sharing/learning opportunities. This was in fact a purely networking event on an overcrowded boat. Thanks for the drinks, Adobe.
  • Troy Goatley
I met some great people, it was more about networking for me so with regards to that, good job. Thanks Gus.
  • Martin Pezet
Excellent sponsorship by Adobe. However, there were just far too many people there. This is a meetup and not a conference so I think it would have been better if you could restrict the numbers a bit more to make it feel like a more like an event where people want to meet and share ideas rather than just surge to the bar en masse. It's a free event so I accept the presentations might be quite general without many real actionable points, but it was a pity there was only 2 speakers as opposed to 4 last time.
  • Fleur Dawes
I had a blast, met loads of interesting people. Thanks to the organisers and Adobe for sponsoring.

Nice set up, presentations were interesting, style good, but would have enjoyed a few more specifics and examples. Bar was generous, and good crowd, but there just wasn't enough space for everyone.
  • Dan Brown
I enjoyed it, but felt it was a little light on the content. Great people and a fun night though. Anyone who had more questions could easily talk to the presenters after the talks.
  • Philip Storey

Lovely to meet so many people from a slightly different part of the industry. The presentations got me thinking, more than inspiring me, but I guess that's the purpose at a meet up.
  • Alex Turner
The talks were too short and didn't really teach and audience of marketing professionals anything new. This would have been better as an introduction to marketing. More work to do on the quality of speakers but the night itself was well organised and marketed.
  • Dean O'Reilly

Really good meet up but maybe a bigger venue for the next one?

It was OK. Nothing special. The presentations were interesting to a degree however I think the quality of slides and detail could certainly have been improved.

Great night - cool people 1st short presentation by Nick Cohen at Mediacom, about corporates and content was fairly good (short and sweet). We're appreciative of sponsored bar as it helps the networking to flow. Hopefully it was a productive or/ and fun night for all.
  • sophie lam
Good presentations but quite general, could have shared something more insightful but still some interesting points.
  • Elaine Quirke
Really good, the talks weren't as insightful as i would like but there were a lot of more junior people in the audience who seemed to find it really useful. It's also a great place to bump into people within the industry.
