Hipster map of Melbourne

Our project this evening: We're going to make a hipster map of Melbourne. A single map showing you where to find the hipsterist bars, cafes and ridiculous cultural phenomena (like jafflechutes and $1000 handmade shoes). It will be decorated with outrageous hipster fonts.

Come along if:

• you have mapmaking skills

• you have technical data aggregation skills

• you have web dev or sysadmin skills

• you have hipster ideas

• you want to learn something!

Bring a laptop. This is a hands-on, fast-flowing hackathon!

Edit: dinner and drinks provided.

Awesome effort. It's going to be used for real. I have a 30 year old relative and fiance visiting from the UK late next week for 7 days, who I think fall into the hipster demographic. I'll email them the link.

Interesting evening for someone who comes from the 'Corporate' world. Whilst I was a taker rather than a giver, I hope that over time this will change. I just need to develop and explore some different technologies. Great time with great company.

Thanks everyone who came along! The map is looking good: hipstermelbourne.org

There's a bit to go still, watch out for PartII soon. There's a pile of pretentiousness in a google doc, just waiting to be rolled into Cartodb: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ash6IlDEWuIvdHZfd1BSbWlKTGQtX0EyMmZRLU1LMFE&usp=sharing

Quick update: I've got all the bits in place now to make this work. We'll use a TileMill basemap (with OpenStreetMap and maybe other stuff), with CartoDB to layer interactive stuff over the top. The CartoDB API is very flexible, so we can incorporate any other interesting features if anyone has any great ideas.

Love the hip-sum on the map! Almost too good to take away. Side project? Melbourne hipster ipsum generator?

    Seed data suggestion: http://www.studentflights.com.au/travel-mag/2013/10/anna-howards-hipster-guide-melbourne/

Looking forward to tonight, though not sure how much help I will be. Wanting to learn more about the process of a 'hack' event, so should be good.

And there's already a Melb ipsum generator. Of course there is! http://www.melbournei...

Yeah, that's where it's from. Sweet isn't it? :) And yeah, everyone is very welcome - lots of ways to contribute other than coding.

Unable to make it, over in States. Really looking forward to seeing the final map and gutted to not be a part of this one. There's that python lib for harvesting instagram, and u have access to the comments and tags used in posts. Have fun!

Ok, guys, it's going to be pretty frenetic, so here's how I see things working out. There are four overlapping teams, so jump in wherever you want to be.

    1. Dev/sysadmin: I've built a server with TileMill nginx and few bits. This team builds a website, works out how to get the data into the map, and uses some kind of JavaScript library (Mapbox API, CartoDB API, straight Leaflet...) to overlay shiny things.

    2. GIS: The expertise on mapping, making the technologies work together, and doing pretty cartography with TileMill.

    3. Hipster domain experts/data wranglers: The heart and soul: find relevant data on the web somewhere, or compile your own mini database, using something like http://geojson.io or CartoDB. Work with the GIS team to choose a platform and the devs to make it work.

    4. Design: We need serious hipster aesthetics, fonts, colours and graphics for the site and in the map itself.

    25+ people, 3 hours to make http://hipstermelbourne.org . Should be nuts :)

Alas, I'll be at a hipster event at that time.

Sounds awesome! I put together a very crude static hipster map, purely based upon the keywords people were tweeting about along the main strips in fitzroy.
    Looking forward to this!
