Crowdfunding a laser cutter

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • If we want the Open Garage to function as a more complete "FabLab" we'll need more lasers, right?

Stefaan has been asking a few HoeLang industries for prices of laser cutters. We're looking at various 40cm x 60cm models and prices seem to be around $2000 (or ~€1500) for a machine. Because this is a bit steep for one person to buy, we're thinking of buying such a machine as a group.

If you are interested in joining this acquisition, please RSVP for this "event" and indicate how much you want to "invest" so you can become a "shareholder" in the laser cutter.

In return, use of the laser cutter will be at a small price (taken from your shares if you have any) so we can have a bit of our investments returned. I want to open up the garage to the shareholders on other days than Thursdays so they can make optimal use of the machine.

I have a possibility to reserve some space in a container coming from Shangai - so we could transfer our LC on the cheap ! Anthony - do you keep track of the total budget up to now ?

Sorry guys, I'll move to Limburg, next year, so unfortunately I can't come to the garage so often, but anyhow, I will still support you and the idea with:

Hello LC fanatics, I've gathered some quotes for a CO2 LC with a 60x90 working area. They're in this Google spreadsheet. Specs and images of the machines are available either via an URL in the spreadsheet, or in a document in the same google drive folder.

    Here's the link:

    https://drive.google.com/folderv...

People who want to co-invest in this machine, please take the time to give your opinion, I've added a colum "I like" : put your name next to your favourite one, and a "comment" column, where you can leave your remarks...

Ofcourse if you have other suggestions for a make/model, you can add them here...

Let's see how long this document stands... :)

At De Brug vzw in Mortsel they are cutting sheet metal with laser. I will check what machine they are using. I will also check what ifabrica.nl has as lasercutters.

hi, I'm in for a 100, prefer to have it in borsbeek too.It maybe cheaper to buy a "small" one with adequate laser, and rebuild it to bigger table and keep the electronics and tweak it ?

    September 11, 2013

  • Pascal R.

I'm in : 100 for the small one, 200 for the bigger one.

Common sizes for lasercutter beds are ( in cm )
    60 x 40
    90 x 60 ( delta in price to 60x40 : +/- US$200 )
    130 x 90 ( delta in price to 90x60 : +/- US$600 )

I think for a general purpose lasercutter we should at least go for a 90 x 60 cm version. Who agrees on this ?
For comparison , I'll set up a google spreadsheet which compares some of the suppliers & their prices.

What are your size requirements ?

I have another proposition. We have a lasercutter (a lasersaur to be more specific) for prototyping at beyond.io and offer it as a service as well with maakbaar.be. We'd be more than happy to open it up at reduced cost on certain days for the Open Garage community. Of course we'll have to discuss the rate both parties would feel comfortable with, but I'm sure we can come to an agreement!

Some of the specs of our machine:
    bed: 1220x610mm
    laserpower: 100W

We also have a decent space at our meeting table and our workshop is getting a make-over soon too!

Regarding location, we're in the center of Antwerp (het Zuid), so parking isn't an issue.

If you want to meet-up here to discuss it, more than welcome!

Sure thing Anthony! Our workshop make-over is planned for the coming month. I'll keep you guys updated!

      September 4, 2013

    • Toon Van de P.

Absolutely, we'll always need complementary tools & expertise. Always up for a trip to Antwerp too.

  • Tim Van den B.

Really interested Anthony. Depending on the lasercutter and the practical arrangements, I'm thinking between[masked] euro. For me, driving distance is a little bigger, so practicalities and time slots could be really important. The other option of maakbaar could also be interesting.

50 and interested ... prefer to have it in our `home spot` in borsbeek

    September 4, 2013

  • Toon Van de P.

€200 would be my maximum commitment, I think.

    September 4, 2013

  • Dries De R.

I'm interested in whatever option. Unregarding the outcome, I could invest €75.
