Meet the Chicago 2012 Code for America Fellows

The main agenda for this meeting is to meet the fellows of the City of Chicago 2012 Code for America project. We'll hear about the project, talk about their (nascent) development plans, and talk about how their work fits with what Chicago developers are up to.

We'll also talk about the CfA Brigade, and generally get together to form bonds and eat food. The fellows will be here for the month of February, and then will be heading back to San Francisco to do the bulk of the work. Here's the CfA page on all of their 2012 fellows. Jesse Bounds, Rob Brackett, Angel Kittiyachavalit, and Ben Sheldon are the fellows assigned to Chicago.

There will also be the usual time on the agenda for any announcements/ demos/ hot topics. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

What a smart group of fellows. I am now much more confident in the future technological aspects of the Chicago 311 system (I wasn't ever worried about the human/operational side).

Q: How are you inspiring children to pursue technology as a career?
    A: "The track jackets."

    Best answer ever.

The best thing that can come out of this meeting is a shared knowledge about what the fellows are doing (bringing the City of Chicago in compliance with the Open311 standard, helping improve and expand the standard, and create a city-wide dashboard for viewing and sorting 311 data) and a sense of where independent developers fit in that new infrastructure.

We had announcements last night about 4 or 5 new projects that are going forward by group members. When our efforts on the outside are loosely coupled with official efforts, everyone wins!

Does this group have other social media outlets? For example, a Facebook Fan Page.

Food for thought: Brett Victor on 'Inventing on Principle.' http://vimeo.com/36579366 "As a technologist, you can recognize a wrong in the world. You can have a vision for what a better world can be, and you can dedicate yourself to fighting for principle. Social activists typically fight by organizing, but you can fight by inventing."
