RE: [OpenTechSchool-Brussels] Build mobile phone applications: Java and Android workshop proposition

Hey everyone

I'd be interested in learning Android and maybe help coaching the Java

Also note, Java was originally developed to be easy to learn, as a stepping stone to C-type languages (C, but especcially C++ and C#) that benefit much from an object oriented approach.

Greetings

Hello all,
Yes, I think we have here three workshops: Java, Android (Prerequisite: Java) and Processing.

For me, the interesting part of Processing for new comers is all the specific functions added over Java. I would feel it more like a good intro to programming in general than a specific good intro to Java.

Cheers,
Roman

Hi Hugo

Good point: Java is a prerequisite for Android.

I've never helped many people at one time, so it was never a problem: I tailor the learning to what people already know.

In this situation, I guess two workshops should be considered (Java , then Android). Or a "continuous entry" workshop, and individual help (more complicated?)

For processing.org: the language is not Java, although it's based on it.

Hi,

Android Workshops would be great, but I believe that you would have to set an "entry level" for participation. The concepts used in Android are not that obvious for beginners (OOP, XML, static typing, ...).

The basics of Java can easily be learned through Processing.org (as workshops are already planned), and it might be appropriate to wait for such workshops to raise the programming skills of our Meetup group before diving into Android building. The alternative would be to focus on the "experienced" programmers of the group now, so that there would be more coaches next time.

Best,

Hugo

Hello everybody

I would like to know if people are interested by a Java and Android workshop.

Java is a widely used programming language. It's used to build mobile phone applications - Android -, dynamic websites and others.

(Friedger already proposed building Android apps using simple tools, maybe he has some ideas to share)

What could be covered in these workshops (nothing definitive yet):
JAVA:
   - basics of programming (if no prior knowlege)
   - variables
   - if, for, while, ...
   - classes, interfaces, methods (OOP)
   - reading/writing to file
   - using Eclipse IDE
   - ...
ANDROID:
   - basics: the Android framework
   - sound, controls, ...
   - creating a graphical user interface (GUI)
   - using OpenGL (for advanced graphics, video games, ...)

I still need to make the presentation appealing (advice welcome), and would be available for coaching.

If you're interested, please respond to that email.
The workshop can be organised if enough people show interest.

Vincent, Hackerspace Brussels
