Some things to know about opera in Atlanta:

The Atlanta Opera’s season is not as robust as other cities. Typically, there are 3 – 4 productions, with 1 in the fall (starts in September), the remainder in the Spring.

Members of this meetup purchase season tickets through www.atlantaopera.org. You may also purchase individual tickets. Ticket prices range wildly. For the 2014 – 2015 season, I purchased season tickets for less than $100 for all three performances (upper balcony; last year orchestra seating for three performances cost $450).

There is no dress code. I have seen ball gowns/tuxes to jeans. Opening performance in the Fall tends to be dressier so that’s when folks really go all out. Spring performances are a bit more relaxed. So no need to buy a ballgown/tux, but if you do, you will be stunning.

The performances are at Cobb Energy Center near Cobb Galleria/Cumberland Mall. There is truly no bad seat at this venue. I have sat in the orchestra section and I have sat in the upper balcony, and though the orchestra is certainly preferable, being broke and sitting in the balcony is just fine too.

I always schedule dinner before each opera so we can hang out, get to know each other. Beyond that, it’s difficult to meet before, at intermission, or after the opera

Atlanta has other terrific opera companies/presence/events

> Emory University

> Georgia State University

> Capitol City Opera (Dinner and a Diva)

> Peach State Opera

> Metropolitan Opera broadcast at local theaters

> Paris Opera House broadcast at CineBistro (Brookhaven)

I try to schedule events as I find them or as I am alerted to them by our wonderful members; but opera is a seasonal art so there may be many dry months (late Spring thru early Fall) when the students are out of school or the other companies have nothing scheduled. Also, opera is not a cheap affair so many times, I simply cannot afford to attend these other performances.

Lastly, opera is not a snobby affair and we are not a snobby bunch. We have become good friends within this group and always have a great time together. So come on in, the water is fine!
