      presentation by member Steve Shaffer
      1. MITDZE: the featured presentation, w/slides&code walk thrus,
*GAE is based on HADOOP(to do its BigTable storage,I think more),+why I got into Python (&I'm now even become the OCPython Co-organizer), as GAE is the hottest scalable web platform I know of available today, seemingly-uniquely allows the code one writes to support just one or a handful of users to immediately & automatically scale up millions or more simultaneous users! See more in the featured topic's discussion thread.
*This should also be a great demo of AngularJS, Python, & OCPython.
      2. MKA8A9: 1st really tested & demonstrated 2 new series features (commenting MKA7I7 and food MK97XF).
    20. MK9D75: members John Sheehan & Reyan Hewitt are event venue hosts, approximated here via the title Event Host, especially to auto-RSVP them as YES since they also most-always attend.

    5. MKDSD4: updated occurrences from MK8U24; changed title fr(OC-Python Main Meetup 2013.04(GAE, training&hacking, &more via cmts!)+) to present; 2013.03.28Thu1028.
    6. MKRFVX: change venue; struck out MK96FL & MEQLGO & MEQLF3; added MKRFTO; replaced venue MKR80T with MKREJO; replaced "How to find us" from q(Everyone you find in the room at this time is there for this.) to present MKRHEP; for upcoming happenings (MK8UAX and subsequent) changed date from 2013.04.30Tue1830-2130~ to present; pst2013.04.04Thu1954.
    7. MKRLJR: Respectfully remove Ryan Hewitt as an "event host" (really just auto-RSVPed YES) for this series as he was a no-show last time (after saying just before he would always be here) moreover he was only "always" attending as he worked at that venue but we're now leaving it; added "Instructions for the Event Hosts" MKRLRN; pst2013.04.04Thu2216.
    8. MKRO49:unfortunately in that last operation, possibly because it moved the schedule 1 day sooner, Meetup.com bug caused it to loose the connection with the future events and doesn't any longer auto-repeat (though it says it does) and MKRO9L is the last event; this means the sync for those future events will have be done manually. Wait, I see the bug caused it to Set to "Stop repeating: 5/26/13"; changed it to "never"; pst2013.04.04Thu2226.
    9. MM1I8V: corrected date typo in MK8U24; since Meetup cutting private Qs from 8 to 6, cut the last 2; pst2013.04.29Mon1623.
    10. MM1LQZ: small updates to MK8UAX, including retitled from q(OC-Python Main Meetup 2013.04(GAE, SALT, training&hacking, &more via cmts!)+); pst2013.04.29Mon1742

PYTHON RUNNING IN THE WEB BROWSER!
    *During the meetup
**Head Dan http://meetup.com/Orange-County... announced he was interested in Python running in the browser
**I replied yes would be very significant for any programming language, indeed why my current favor language is JavaScript (see http://1.JotHere.com/2716#M1KK4... ), but last I heard in running in the web browser were only JavaScript & limited XSLT http://1.JotHere.com/2716#M1KLC...
**He said there are now a number of Pythons running in the web browser
**I said ~"Cool! Would you like to do a presentation on that, say at next meeting?"
**He said "Ok, I'll do that."
*Ok, I'm now scheduling it for next mtg http://meetu.ps/MSlSn : see description point http://1.JotHere.com/MJHref?q=&... .

Here's what I have so far: http://stromberg.dnsa... . If people have suggestions for columns (attributes of python implementations) or rows (python implementations) I should add, please speak up!

A few random notes from last nights meeting:

Google fusion was mentioned multiple times throughout the evening. Fusion engine will not geocode in the backgrouund, only when table editor is connected.

There are a dozen pythons that run in the browser. Even XSLT in a browser. -- Dan

Hey guys, if you guys want to check on a project for geocoding, I'm trying to build a site for posting jobs and resumes. So whenever you type a skill, address, or company on the application, you'll e able to find work within the area. Here's the sample code on github: https://github.com/fritzdenim/as...

    • DestinyArchitect

Steve just SMSed me (should be posted here for all) "..I know some people wanted to talk about GAE tonight, so I can entertain but I don't have any big presentation besides what I brought last time. I'm putting a git repository up right now as a starter project if people want to hack on something, but that's all ive got. 4:02 PM" --sounds great Steve, indeed a starter project for all of us interested to work on sounds wonderful. KEY STUFF TO BRING FOR THIS MTG THIS EVE 6pm-10pm. Quoting from our agenda http://1.JotHere.com/967#M3BB40 as this cannot be said enough, quote:
    M3BB40: Key stuff to bring:
MJGNGL:Bring your devices for accessing Meetup & portable Internet if you have it.
M6VJ4I:DEFINITELY BRING YOUR LAPTOP –VERY IMPORTANT, including for posting questions & announcements, RSVPing for & suggesting future events & topics, and web research.
M6VJ2P:Bring ALL DEVICES you may want to work on and/or have questions about..
M0SVG5:If programming or learning-to, BRING YOUR HARDWARE & SOFTWARE for coding/developing (your laptop+mobile devices+hookup cables)
M0TCJ6: If you don’t yet have the software (as Android IDE) installed, that’s fine, as we provide it and help you install it during our meeting (at least in OCAndroid).
-including our new training http://meetup.com/Orange-County... is undable if u hv no laptop, so bring it!

    April 29

  • DestinyArchitect

ALL-LEVEL AT-YOUR-OWN-PACE TRAINING (FOR CODING PYTHON)
*on our agenda at http://1.JotHere.com/MJGKNU and
*happening at this mtg http://1.JotHere.com/MJHref?q=&... and, until announced, all future meetings
*as I proposed and agreed with great (indeed majority!) interest at our last meeting http://meetup.com/Orange-County... -see that for additional planning details started there
*If you want to be one of the many so far planning to join in, follow the RSVP instructions http://1.JotHere.com/MJGO6I
*And stay tuned: more details (as syllabus) coming soon.
    *Looking forward to this!

    March 31

    • DestinyArchitect

*This thread is URL http://meetup.com/Ora... .
As promised, here's our (brand new) LUMDBI Python (programming language) Syllabus http://1.JotHere.com/... ; in particular,
*We will be starting off MIT's course quote("2011.01 "MIT 6.189: A Gentle Introduction to Programming using Python") http://1.JotHere.com/...
**Includes pair-building of a tetris game!
**In particular, in prep for this meeting, if you possibly can,
***Do the setup instructions http://1.JotHere.com/... especially to get your laptop ready, especially the downloads (I've copied all to my laptop but haven't yet gotten wifi sharing working) as our Internet may not be reliable unless attendees bring portable hotspots per request http://meetup.com/Ora...
***Read up what we'll be doing (via these links).

      April 29

  • DestinyArchitect

IN ADDITION TO YOUR LAPTOP, GET & BRING YOUR PORTABLE INTERNET, ideally sharable Wifi Hotspot.
*This venue is a lot of fun(I've held many great meetings there for OCAndroid) but it lacks Internet. And in this meeting, every attend will need to be surfing the web with his/her laptop (for the training, RSVPs,event planning, grp posting, &much more). So 2help solve this, get&bring your portable Internet described above.
*I'll be bringing my T-Mobile 4G Android phone w/highly recommended FoxFi app http://1.JotHere.com/1961#M1B3G... but it's sometimes flaky&likely not enough for all 18 of us.
*So bring ur own, too, ideally that u can share. U can bring:
**ur smartphone w/FoxFi-or-equivalent-or-rooting (to avoid hving 2pay extra for hotspot) or buy ur carrier's hotspot option, or
**a separate portable hotspot, as perhaps extremely clever YourKarma http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33... -making u very cool!

    April 29

    • DestinyArchitect

*This thread is at URL http://meetup.com/Ora...
*Note as mentioned in that last URL on YourKarma, FreedomPop can give seemingly anyone (who gets one fast) as cheap portable Internet hotspot for $0 (yes, FREE) for month for up to 500MB and $10/mo for each additional 1GB.
**Especially if you don't yet have any portable hotspot and it seems hard to get your smartphone working as one, I suggest you order one of these while they're still free-monthly.

      April 29

    • DestinyArchitect

~2:40pm-4:01pm I even called & emailed (message ID MM1E98) this venue' next-door neighbors http://psbusinesspark... with a careful win-win sales pitch to share with us their wifi, at least for future mtgs. I'll report back here how it goes.

  • Bobby M.

I noticed the location has changed. Is this permanent?

    April 4

    • Steve Shaffer

I don't know the details, but I'm gathering that we can't meet at SmartSoft anymore (possibly because it's shutting down?). I think this is a stop-gap meeting place until we can find a more well-equipped space. A few suggestions have been thrown at on mailing lists. I'm very confused by how all these forums, comments, and mailing lists work on meetup. It's all rather disjointed. But in any case, I'm sorry to hear about SmartSoft and hoping we can find another place that works as well for us.

Do you guys have plans to register for google code jam? http://code.google.com/codejam. I don't think there's a fe, and I think it's really fun to try. Let's get that adrenaline pumpin'!

    April 2

    • Edward Liaw

I signed up just now :D

      1 · April 2

    • Franz Noel Tanglao

What if we're going to check patterns of the problems, build libraries, discuss meetings about the libraries monthly, then use those libraries for next year's Google Code Jam! I'm pretty sure, it will be easier if we know how to use OCPUG libraries next year. All we need to do is call functions. It's legal!

      April 2

  • Bobby M.

I have a serious concern. The potential attendance fee is complete garbage. I have a serious problem against this.

    March 28

    • Edward Liaw

We voted pretty solidly against having any attendance fee at the last meetup. I think only Michael or Dan can remove it though.

      1 · March 31

    • Bobby M.

That's really nice to hear. I could see charging for a special event, but to have a mandatory entrance fee would make a lot of people reconsider showing up. Very happy to hear this is no longer an issue

Bobby M. http://meetup.com/Orange-County... 's attendance & review of this event
*now I 1st RSVPed him as YES per he tentatively doing the Salt presentation here http://meetup.com/Orange-County...

    February 26

    • Bobby M.

Since Destiny went out of his way to schedule me to talk, after multiple times of me telling him I couldn't commit to a time, I'd like to keep this month open for anyone else who'd like to talk. Personally I think after Feb's meeting, a small intro to git would be more useful to people, but I will make an effort to have a few use cases to present to everyone in the April meetup if I am able to attend.

      March 30

    • Franz Noel Tanglao

Thank you. I personally would love to hear it!

      March 30

  • Steve Shaffer

So this is maybe not a suggestion for next meeting, but I'd love to have someone do a presentation on how to properly use git/GitHub.

Certainly not Python-specific, but I'm sure something that would be very useful to any Python programmers who don't already use it (and selfishly I'd like someone to explain to me which commands I'm supposed to use and which I can just ignore as I'm just barely learning it).

    March 27

    • Bobby M.

I'd recommend sticking to git if you're going to use github. Mercurial has a neat wrapper that'll push a Mercurial repo into git, but it would be significantly easier to learn the basics of git.

      1 · March 28

    • Franz Noel Tanglao

I'm not good with git. I'm using svn. But it's good to know. Thanks for the advice.

1st announced PRESENTATION of Salt Stack http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa...) as by Bobby M. http://meetup.com/Orange-County...
*this occurrence proposed now in this thread on Salt http://meetup.com/Orange-County...
    *currently tentative

    February 26

    • Edward Liaw

Nice! I remember you mentioning Saltstack before as a server administration/management tool. If I got the gist of it, it lets you deploy shell commands across machines that are organized into groupings?

      March 29

    • Bobby M.

Commands are a small fraction. You can execute programs, create/change/remove users both at the OS and in supported applications, update software, retrieve system information, and much more. What's nice about it is that it will scale down to a single instance, so for example I can run it in a Virtual Machine to create the same exact development environment for testing, or use it for a small appliance hardware to guarantee that the right packages are getting installed at boot.

      March 30

  • Bobby M.

Does anyone else have a hard time following all of the crazy font size changes and what not above? Can we use regular text?
