Designing for Big Data

Google UX invites OCUX to its Designing for Big Data Tech Talk! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 20 at 6:00pm. This invite-only event will fill up quickly, so take a moment to learn more and RSVP today.

What is this about?
Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Data design plays a huge role to make ever-growing troves of data truly accessible and actually useful.

We are seeing a cultural shift where the everyday person has access to massive amounts of data. But there’s still a gap between a desire to use that data to inform personal and business decisions and the ability to practically access, manage, analyze, and interpret data.

At Google our approach involves interaction designers, visual designers, motion designers, prototypers, user experience researchers, quantitative user experience researchers, user experience writers, content strategists, and design producers.

Our panel discussion by Google experts will cover topics including what we mean by “scale” when we’re talking about designing for big data, how the visual representation of data influences interpretation, how people can hope to interact with data, and the performance issues associated with dealing with large (huge!) amounts of data.

In true Google style, we’ll have beverages and bites for you and Googlers will be on hand to answer questions and talk one-on-one.

Parking
Parking is complimentary courtesy of Google in the parking structure adjacent to the offices. Doors will open at 6 pm and you must pick up your parking voucher at the registration after parking in the structure.

Google will pay for 3 hours of parking on Wed evening. They will distribute parking vouchers at check-in desk. People need to insert both tickets (the one they received when they park their car and the other one from Google at check-in) to the machine when they leave the parking building.

Agenda (subject to change)
6:00pm - 7:00pm Doors Open, Registration, Tour, Networking, and Hors d'oeuvres
7:00pm - 8:20pm Presentations and Q&A
8:20pm - 9:00pm Networking and Dessert

Inspiring event – thank you! Great example of how empathy breeds empathy in the creative world. I saw the human experience being valued at all levels – starting from the employees and extending out to all users.

    August 20, 2014

    • Shraddha S.

Sorry Ryan. The final list was sent to Google last week and nobody else will be added. Please join OCUX and you will be among the first to get an invite to the next session we hold.

    Makes me more curious...

Congrats to all the lucky people who have secured a spot for this Google event. If you are among the first 100 who RSVP'd you are assured a spot at the event. If you discover you cannot attend please change your RSVP so people on the wait list can attend. Google needs the final list by Thursday so RSVPs will close on Wednesday night. Make your changes by then!

    • Just Call Me K.

The list order was messed up. I was 8 or 9 on the waiting list IIRC, but am like 17 now. Any chance we can convince Google just to add 20 more chairs? :P

      August 12, 2014

    • Shraddha S.

No we can't do that,Ken. Google has been unfailingly generous to us in spirit and in deed for inviting us to this incredible tech talk on their campus as they spring for food and parking for all of us. I hope that those of us that are on the final list will express our gratitude to them at the event.

      August 12, 2014

  • Shraddha S.

Hello. Yesterday afternoon there seemed to have been a computer glitch and everyone on the wait list was added to the official RSVP list. Google has capped us at 100. So, I had to put the 16 people who were added to the RSVP most recently (according to the Meetup site) onto the Wait List last night. If you were among the 16 that have been placed on the Wait List you would've received an email to that effect. Thanks for your patience on this. It is greatly appreciated.
