Economical and ecologically resourceful way to start seed

My jicama seems to be slow to sprout when I planted it directly into the ground this year so I decided to sprout some seeds in the house and then let them go the rest of the way outside. I though back to a lady I saw at the farmers market making seed cubes with this device she brought and I came up with this:

I took some worm castings and placed a seed in the middle and squeezed it into a ball in the same manner one would make a patty or meatball. Then placed all of these balls in a container and placed in on the hot water heater. No starter trays or equipment to buy for making seed cubes.

Sounds a bit like Fukuoka's seed balls.
