Would you like to increase your garden’s sustainability with Heirloom edibles? Join us at the Second Annual Greenville Sustainability Fair for FREE HEIRLOOM SEEDS if you can contribute some heirlooms yourself. Heirloom seeds are those that have been passed down from generation to generation over the years. Heirloom seeds have been "open pollinated," where seeds are harvested from the plant, saved, planted, and the same variety will re-grow year after year. But not all open-pollinated seeds are heirlooms; heirlooms are the "old-timey" seeds that are passed down over many years. Heirloom seeds are not hybrid seeds (seeds that have been cross-pollinated by mixing two different plants of the same species, like a mix of two different tomatoes or varieties of corn.) Cross-pollination is done by hand, and this hybrid seed saved will not grow true to either parent. Heirloom seeds are not GMO's, or genetically modified organisms. GMO seeds have been altered using DNA from different species and organisms to give different traits such as resistance to herbicides and pesticides. Benefits of heirloom seeds include adaptability and flavor.
Our HEIRLOOM SEED EXCHANGE booth will be open for half-hour periods starting at 9:30 and then at other times during the day. It is best if you can divide your heirloom seeds into many packets and label them with their characteristics and growing instructions. Or, if you have a large quantity, bring it in a bucket or container that won't blow away, make a sign with all the characteristics & growing instructions; we'll provide scoopers or spoons for people to package them in and write what's needed on envelopes. Seeds can include all plants that produce edibles: Vegetables, grains, fruits, trees or root crops.
The Second Annual Greenville Sustainability Fair at Market Square, 2400 Lee Street at Bois d’ Arc, Greenville. TX. Fair is from 8 am until 4 pm. The first Heirloom Seed Exchange is at 9:30 am until 10 am. Others will be held during the day as we have collected enough seeds to reopen. The last seed exchange will be from 3 pm until 3:30 pm.
