Congratulations Richmond Paddlers – the Ladies came in 2nd and Mixed 4th overall!!
Honestly, I knew the Ladies were going to rock it, but had no clue how the Mixed team would fare against 8 well established clubs. A third of the Mixed team roster (half the men) never raced a 500M and paddled less than 4 months. Yeah we came up a little short at Richmond… actually 2 seconds b/t us and 2nd place, but I see this as a major victory. After the first race, we were set to be in the Consolation Group Finals; however, the team kicked it up a notch and got us into the Grand Finals. In that race, we beat Red Dragons off the line and held them until the last 100 meters!! Thank you Coach Giang for your leadership and coaching on Saturday!
Clearly we have the raw ingredients to become an elite club team. We just need more seasoning and to simmer on the stove a little longer. Next up: Atlanta on September 14th. Men, outrigger trials will be happening very shortly... be prepared!!
