Who are some of your favorite writers? Or the last book you have read?

Last night I read Terry Pratchett's Sourcery--so funny. Also in progress is The Hunger Games. Last week I reread Water for Elephants and enjoyed it very much. One of my favorite books is a collection of short stories by Nabokov mostly because of the poetic imagery. Another favorite is Ursula Le Guin. For romance, I like Jo Beverley and in Chick-Lit, Marian Keyes is a favorite. Oh, and Roddy Doyle--I can hear the Irish accent when I read his books.

What would you like to improve with your writing?

Pacing. And not editing so much as I write.

What genres do you tend to write? For example, paranormal romance, hard science fiction, etc.

Fantasy (epic) and historical romance. I tend to ground my stories in history, real or imagined. Most stories also have a bit of Gothic romance about them as well--a ghost or castle dungeon or whatever.

What is the best or worst piece of writing advice you've ever been given?

"Omit needless words," is both the best and the worst--because I have a tendency to go to the extreme and make my writing too sparse.

When participating in small group discussions, do you more often listen or wait to speak?

I'm a listener but I speak up when I feel I have something of value to contribute.

Introduction

I am almost finished the first draft of a fantasy novel. I would like to meet with other fantasy writers for encouragement, critique and networking. I have been technical writer/editor and a history teacher.

What Kate M. is saying about this Meetup Group

This is a group of talented writers and yet they are all so different from each other that the insights they offer are both diverse and constructive. A great group!
