I've been a member of a number of critique groups, but none of them have ever been sci-fi-specific. I've written a couple novels and other pieces that need reviews from my target audience.
I would characterize my writing as fast-paced, "smart" sci-fi. It probably falls somewhere between hard and cult. My typical sub-genres are space opera, military, and cyberpunk.
Keep at it if you're really serious. Dune was rejected something like 44 times before being published.
I'm not sure I follow this question. According to the critique group etiquette to which I'm accustomed, the person being critique remains silent and listens while each person critiquing offers his or her comments. Rebuttal comes at the end, if any.
I've immersed myself in sci-fi since I was old enough to obliterate Lego spaceships with Lincoln Log photon torpedoes. My writing is fast-paced yet thought-provoking. I'm a grad student in Space Systems at FIT.
Good group with some great comments. The critique format worked well.
