We are a group of life-long learners, thinkers, dialoguers, autodidacts, and tinkerers, who get together and discuss questions from all fields of knowledge.
The plan is to choose a short text or two, read them individually, and then come to the meeting ready to discuss questions, connections, insights, and ideas we each gleam from the text. In this way, we hope to combine the best of a reading group with the best of a small discussion group (Socratic seminar or symposium).
Members of the group are allowed--and are indeed encouraged--to propose texts and topics. The breadth of topics and texts is as wide as interests of the group membership.
As to by-laws, rules, and procedures, at this point, the goal and requirement for a group such as this is mutual respect. The thinkers in this group will come from all different walks of life, with varying background knowledge. The proliferation of perspectives must be encouraged. Though there will be legitimate differences of opinion and belief, as long as proselytizing is kept out of the discussion and mutual respect is emphasized, these differences can provide grounding through which each member clarifies his or her own understanding.
Finally, this group is a work in progress. To borrow a principle from the New Acropolis organization, it is hoped that the project of creating a community of thinkers not only helps satisfy a genuine need for thoughtful discussion, but that the process of preparing, engaging, reflecting, and improving the framework that constitutes our group expands the capabilities of each participant.
Through these discussions, we should better understand the ideas, our own understandings, and each other. But, if you just want to come out and talk about the topic under discussion, that's okay too!
