RE: [orlandophp] STOP RIGHT NOW and CONTACT ME GREEAATT PHP Position available today!!!!

Here is the solution:

create a separate mx entry for recruiters and have every member subscribed to it by default.
members can unsubscribe when they become overwhelmed with recruitment emails.

this should solve absurd bickering etc.

Hi everybody,

I was going to let this thread die (and probably should), but I've been thinking about this tonight and it's brought a few things to mind.

First, I was very short in my e-mail where I stated that I banned an Ashley Ellis rep from the iOS meetup group. I actually banned the recruiter for using a form letter they sent to the group, which had previous been sent by a different Ashley Ellis recruiter. Basically two people sent the exact same e-mail, down to the letter. I felt this was not beneficial to anyone in the community, and I banned the recruiter in an effort to keep spammy e-mails from hitting the group. I actually encourage recruiters to use the mailing list to reach out to developers. I only ask that they do so in a non spammy and personable way. The guidelines that David laid out are excellent, and I would highly suggest that everyone read them. We all know the economy sucks right now, and anything we can do to get people to work would be beneficial.

That said, I know there are a lot of recruiters that are on this meetup mailing list, as well as many other technology lists in the area. Although some of the feedback tonight may have been mildly abrasive, I think the underlying message is that there are many in the community who have been burned by recruiting agencies in the past. When you're looking for work, and you feel like the people who are supposed to help you don't do a good job, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

From talking with other developers in the community, I think most of us have agreed that the recruitment system is broken. Rather than letting this thread die, or complaining that e-mails are threading your inbox, I think this is a great opportunity to open a discussion about what recruitment tactics work, or how you would look for a job as a developer. There's a disconnect between some of the recruitment companies and the development community, and if anything, this thread has shown that there are some things that can be fixed. Rather than shutting down, I would encourage any recruitment companies who are paying attention to this thread to take the feedback from the community and tailor your business using techniques that are approved by the community.

Full disclosure - I'm currently working with a recruiter to find a full time position in Orlando, and he's been wonderful to work with. I think most of the negativity in this thread has been less about recruitment companies in general, and more about the tactics that are used.

Anyway, just wanted to throw my two cents in rather than leaving it at a quickly typed e-mail on my phone. I hope everyone's had a good night!

TL;DR - The Nobel Peace Prize medal depicts 3 naked men with their hands on each others shoulders.

Allison,

It was nice of you to respond to their reactions. I'm pretty sure the only reason there was a negative reaction was that the subject line was written in all caps. I think everyone can appreciate the value of recruiters letting us know of open opportunities, and the rest of the email seemed well enough written. We get these on the list all the time and there was no backlash before. Since you are a recruiter and not a coder, you likely have no idea of what a serious faux pas writing something in all caps is - it's a BIG DEAL. ;-) (Apparently enough to get banned from a group!)  The complainers weren't very specific, so I'm just writing this to help you know what they meant - how these seemingly small things can make you friends or enemies in the coding world. So keep it professional - stay away from all caps and gimmicky expressions, include good technical content, and you should be fine. Please spread the word to your fellow recruiters.

Have a nice day,

Trevor
