Dear Group,

While I generally handle these matters privately, it seems I have been forced to deal with this in public. I apologize in advance for any unwanted email messages.

I contracted with Zack Perdue for a small bit work on an existing project. The work I assigned him was to produce several page templates based on comprehensive designs provided as Photoshop files. He began work on Sept. 10 with a clearly defined statement of work. I also provided him with carefully coded examples of controllers, templates and stylesheets. The deadline, per the statement of work, was Sept. 12.

He did not meet the deadline, and the work he delivered was of such poor quality that it was unusable.

At one point, after he had delivered his first very bad example of a page template, I wrote to him to try and get him to fix it. The page was not marked up according to spec. His response was that it would take too long for him to mark the page up correctly.

I continued to try and work with him. Over the course of three days, we exchanged over 70 email messages. Most were due to him delivering page templates that were not correct, and me having to do quality assurance work that he should have done himself.

Late on Friday, one day after the deadline. He delivered a set of page templates that had a long list of obvious flaws. I quickly followed up with a punch list. He responded that he was done for the day and asked me to fix the page templates for him.

On Sunday, having not heard back from him. I produced the page templates myself, from scratch, directly from the Photoshop files, without using any of the unfinished, error-filled, unusable work he had provided.

On Monday morning, I delivered the work I had developed myself to the client. Later that day Zack contacted me to ask "What's Next?".

What makes matters even more ridiculous is that I have a signed contract and statement of work with Zack Perdue. The agreement states that an initial payment of half the contracted price will be made within 30 days after the project begins. The balance will then be paid 30 days after final, complete delivery of the work and receipt of an invoice. Please note the date.

If the group is so willing, I ask that you act as Solomon. What is Zack due and when is he due it? I will abide fully by the group's decision.

I have been in the web development business since the mid 90's. I have worked with many people. I have seen the good and the bad. This past week I saw another glaring example of the bad. I will not make the same mistake again, and neither should you.

Oh, and Zack got the URL of my web site incorrect. It's aeonblu.com.

Best regards.

Hey Orlando PHP User group, I've got a heads up for you all. It seems that Lance, the owner of a "web company" particularly aeonblue.com, doesn't like to pay for work his subcontractors do for him.

So if by chance you see him post into the user group again, heed my warning and steer clear - or you'll be working for free.

Anyways, just a friendly shout out. Carry on!

Best,

Zack Perdue
