Great Start! Now What?

Hey, all!

Thanks for a great turn-out at our first meeting of the year, and many thanks to the fine folks at Sonobi in Winter Park for sponsoring! I know that I had a great time meeting everyone and banging out some great presentation ideas for 2014. I hope everyone else did, too, and I'm looking forward to February's meeting!

If anyone has any additional ideas for presentations, please bring them! We'll also discuss the ideas we came up with in January and get them on the calendar so folks can start working on presentations. Don't worry if you don't know a lot about the subject; the best way to learn is to teach others.

Here's the run-down from our brainstorming session:

• Scripting XMBC with Python

• Continuous Integration with Trac & Bitten

PyGame for Hacking 2D and 3D Games

• Scripting the Raspberry Pi in Python

Open For Business "Enterprise Automation System"

• CAGE MATCH: Python vs Jython vs IronPython vs PyPy

• API Development with Flask (or other microframeworks)

• Beware the Global Interpreter Lock: Multithreaded and Multiprocess Programs

SQLAlchemy: the ORM you won't hate.

• Event-Driven Daemons & Sockets by Sonobi

Zookeeper: Managing Distributed Applications

• NumPy & SciPy for Data Science!

• PID Lockfiles & Well-behaved Daemons

• Intro to Django: the web framework for perfectionists with deadlines

• Avoiding Dependency Hell with virtualenv

There were several folks that volunteered to give presentations in January, but I won't hold you to that unless you confirm your intention this month. I know, it was the beer talking... or maybe the wontons. If there's something on this list that you think you'd like to tackle, either to learn it yourself or just teach others, feel free to call dibs on the mailing list. If there's something you DON'T see, bring your idea to the meeting, and we'll add it to the list!

Seeya there!
