Dialogue about Postmodernism.

Are we interested in discussing Art topics?

If your answer is "Yes" this event is for you to attend. Postmodernism.  What is that?

An event to have a "Tertulia" about nothing and all.

Love and Peace.

Great job Alduy! Takes a lot of courage to engage people in discussing Postmodernism. You brought up some great examples in defining the challenges us artist have in creating something bigger than ourselves and what has past.

We should not delude ourselves in anticipating what the membership wants. Membership on paper does not count for a tangible entity. Until a physical body actually shows up, it is just names on a piece of paper.
We need to proceed with what we have, the faces we see, and the interest that promote themselves will be represented. I Will not be too concerned myself about hypotheticals nor would I venture to anticipate another's needs.
One thing is clear, we cannot continue our indepth plans under the auspices of "meetup", so we need to consider alternative arrangements.
These issues should be tabled for further discussions, hopefully in the next meeting.

  • maho

All things being equal we had a good meeting. There were some substantive issues touched upon, and there are many possibilities.
I believe we need to focus on the mechanism of our meetings moving forward. A moderator is essential and it is also imperative we all abide and respect the rules of meeting. This way we can spend way less time repeating ourselves and be way more productive by the end of each session.
On a whole good effort. Thank you Alduy for all your effort.

We have so many topics to discuss. In this meetup the subject was kind of lost in the chaos of our inquietude but as always it was a pleasure to get together with you. Also I believe many good ideas and facts will come for the benefit of the members as well as our community.
    Love and peace

    Hello Everyone,
I just want to remind you the suggested parking is the annexed one, not in front of the store. I am planning to be earlier at the site if you have any doubt. Also, please notice we are just a few if you are planning to bring any snacks. The estimated duration of the meeting is an hour and a half.
With great expectations about our dialogue,
    Peace.

Alduy mentioned snacks. May I suggest we all bring something to share. A little coordination would go a far way at this point. Please bear in mind this could be a prototype event, (well as far as Sam Flax, our sponsor goes). It would be well worth the effort for each of us make it a positive event from our own perspective, not waiting for someone else to make it happen for us. Of course with due respect to Alduy, the event host and all the great people working behind the scenes to make this meet-up work.

OK, so it seems a small and intimate group will be in the throws of a relevant and timely exchange. Though I am looking forward to this I non the less have no expectations as to the outcome. For me this is about being present. Should there be one, or one hundred, it will be the same. My purpose is to be there and to embrace the experience of the now. I am neither a buyer or seller of wares. I am neither a giver or taker, I simple am. It is from such place that all possibilities are sourced, and from such place that divine intentions are realized.

So then, with that saying,.. I will see you when I see you if it is fact meant to be. Much love to you all.

It is okay with our Sponsor, Sam Flax, for us to bring some snacks and drinks to the facility at the time of our gathering. Said that I will bring drinks and cups. Also I want to add that I invited Sam Flax personnel to our meeting and they deeply appreciated it.
    Love and prosperity to all.

Alduy you would have liked Oliver Stone's speech. He basically said we need to stop being conformists. He spoke alot about art. One point he brought up was that diction needs to be taught in schools. That's so dead on. Our younger generation doesnt know how to talk anymore. It comes out wrong. Wrong speed wrong volume, wrong words. I think that's a result of technology. texting instead of talking. facebooking instead of doing real activity.

To surrender to technology, image saturation, hyper-reality, social and cultural pluralism, fragmentation, rejection of "master narratives", art as process, hybridism, individual "narratives", emphasis on the visual over the discursive, etc, etc, etc. So many aspects to reflect on in such a small amount of time. We could say some of those aspects are " positive" some are" negative". Some are political, social, economic, philosophical.

I have said it in the past and I still believe it is true. We each have a responsibility to make things happen. When we all play our part, no matter how small, we all will enjoy the fruits of our efforts.

Sitting back and waiting to be excited by some event is like purchasing entertainment at a movie or concert. you get what you pay for. This is meet up, and we are the entertainment, we are the show. Meet-up only works if we all play our part, so let us put on the show of a life time. What is there to be fearful of and what are we waiting for. Ok so that is my pep talk,

I don't think we are seeing much post modernism at all. Now days its become status quo to conform. The use of propaganda makes people unable to think for themselves, through a false sense of entitlement. Our kids are told they are brilliant so they lose the desire to learn. I think technology has a huge effect pacifying what is post modernism. I might call the hipster movement post modern a lot of what they do though goes hand-in-hand with propaganda so maybe not . In the art world "maybe" definitely not in the music world. to many approval junkies. I do feel people are becoming aware of the ego.

I am so satisfied to announce Sam Flax is gladly going to let us use their flat space in their store to hold our meeting. Thanks for the support!!
They just request us to park in the additional parking lot, not in the one immediately outside the store. I think this is a very reasonable request.
Hope to see you all in our meeting. Love, prosperity and creativity to all.
    Peace,
    Alduy T.

At the end postmodernism ideas are about us, humans. Can we create a new "us"? Let us start with this small meeting, as artists, art lovers, trying to let our voices be heard in this small community, our art to be exposed to the community too.

    April 19, 2013

  • maho

It would be very interesting not only to discuss these issues but also to concretize interpretations in art and music. Clearly we are living in pivotal times, and clearly changes are immanent if we are to survive. We can choose to ignore and play possum or we can wake up and start by doing one small thing, like maybe plant a tomato plant in this post modern world we live in.

Is it possible we are more betrothed to the idealisms in our heads, we fail to see the stark truth staring us in the face, Just like the Emperor who fail to see he was naked.
For fear of being labeled "negative" we keep silent as our collective future slowly slips from our grasp into the hand of a post modern elitist mentality. A post modernist view/ truth?

    April 18, 2013

We cut down tree to plant grass and use valuable water from the aquifer to water it. We apply poisonous chemical to incapacitate the natural processes of the Earth. We are more concerned about "the value to our properties". Just as food prices escalates and the aquifers are pumped dry, as we wonder why the cost of food is rising. This is postmodernism, Or is it?

    April 18, 2013

  • maho

There is a disconcerting notion that "we are entitled to it all". While this idea serves to promote confidence in some cases, an oversubscription of this concept has proven not to serve us in the long run.
We choose not o plant our food, build the things we need as a society, Plant the seeds of our future, yet we somehow rationalize that someone will do it for us, because they are obliged to do it while we reap the benefits of it all.
I believe this is a post modern idea.

Someone once said if you choose not to value what you have then how can you expect to be valued. Every great tree was once a seed. I choose to be a believer, I believe we can change things, and we can simply do this by first believing and secondly acting on that belief.

To help each other, to live beyond the surface of our desires, and to believe in a greater vision is what enduring growth is about. Thanks to all the organizers and supporters who have put themselves out there to be involved and to make a contribution. We all know it is not always easy, nor is it always convenient. Thank you

I really hope, Joseph does not change his mind on this. And yes, I believe we are moving, where? I do not see it clearly now, but we are. I only expect we really can interchange ideas related to art, culture, community, knowing where we stand up, in time and place. And overall, I really hope and pray we have a great time surrounded by fellow creative beings.

As far as the venue, I understand sam flax has meeting facilities, they are sponsors of this group, that is a possibility. Secondly we could do this in a kind volunteer home. Obviously someone in Orlando.
As we have done in the past we could do a pot luck. Each person bring something. Alternately we could put it out that we are looking for spomsorship on the food. There are tremendous possibilities., we just need to define a direction.

Hello, Stephen. I think Stephanie-UCF studios is in Orlando Downtown. A building where the MFA program operates. We need to make sure. Also I think it depends on her group-classmates decision.

"Reality" as we know it cannot be simply validated because it is so, especially if such a "reality" brings challenges to our survival. Beauty comes out of a practical aesthetics which leans on functionality and practicality for support. Let us talk, and let us discuss, because in such discussions could germinate the seed of solutions, to what is not yet understood to be challenges.

    March 23, 2013

  • maho

The discourse on art, architecture and style would be more relevant if framed within the context of current trends. Today we are facing real issues, that future generations will be talking about for a very long time, providing of course we, as a species are still around.

Development, economics, trends and even the perception of beauty are all criteria for such discussions. We could even throw in the environmental impact of development, and the question of acceptable value, for a fair mix. I am curious to see what comes of this discussion which I believe is very appropriate and timely.

This would be wonderful. My fellow MFA candidates and I are continuously having these conversations. Just a suggestion, and I would have to talk with them as well, but maybe it could be held at our studios. If not I would be interested in attending depending on the location.

Location wise, if not in your studios, around Orlando Downtown. Joseph suggested in Dandelion, which I like and know. I am also thinking about the Public Library.
Does anybody else have a suggestion?
