Osho Kundalini Meditation: An Active Meditation to Move You Into Silence
Kundalini acts like an energetic shower, softly shaking you free of your day and leaving you refreshed and mellow.
The music has been composed under Osho's direct guidance specially for this particular meditation. This meditation is usually done in the late afternoon to let go off the accumulated stress of the day.
Kundalini is not really meditation. It is just preparation. You are preparing your instrument. When it is ready, you stand in silence, then meditation starts. Then you are utterly there. You have woken yourself up by jumping, by dancing, by breathing, by shouting – these are all devices to make you a little more alert than you ordinarily are. Once you are alert, then the waiting. Waiting is meditation. Waiting with full awareness. And then it comes, it descends on you, it surrounds you, it plays around you, it dances around you, it cleanses you, it purifies you, it transforms you. Osho
Why you are stressed out?
Repressed emotions, traumatic memories reduce your energy by blocking the flow of energy . When the flow of energy is blocked, you feel as you are stuck or it may ultimately express as physical illness.
There are two types of stress: physical and non-physical. Non-physical stress comes from hidden memories that tend to cause deep internal stress. This is the kind of stress we need to release.
Many meditative techniques require one to sit still and silent. But for most of us accumulated stress in our body-mind makes that difficult.We need to let go of our tensions.
Osho Active meditation are designed to effectively release stress, tensions-energy blocks which block the natural flow of energies in our body, allowing us to become more peaceful and relaxed.
Osho Kundalini Meditation is a gentle yet effective way to release all the accumulated stress.
Is a one hour meditation technique which has four stages each of 15 minutes. First three stages are with music and the last stage is without music.
First Stage -
It last for 15 minutes. In this stage, we have to stand with some distance between our feets. But we should be in a comfortable position and stay relax and loose.
As the music starts, we should allow the whole body to shake. This shaking will take some times to start, so we have to wait for the shaking to start instead of mechanically forcing it. But at the same time we have to cooperate with the shaking and stay receptive and open.
I would like to insist again, We are not suppose to force the shaking, instead we have to allow it to happen and cooperate with the shaking, as it gathers momentum. If shaking happens correctly and on its own, then the energy will rise upwards from the feets. Feel this energy moving up from your feet. Let go totally with this moving energy and become the shaking. Our eyes may be open or closed in this stage.
We should wait for the shaking to come and overtake us. whereas in Kundalini meditation we need to be in total non-doing or let go state.
It is for 15 minutes of dancing. Dance any way we feel like. Let the whole body moves, sways and makes it own rhythm. This dancing is to spread the energy through out the body. Kundalini meditation melts many blocks of energy in our system and allow the energy to be distributed evenly over the body. That's the reason I have chosen the picture of running water, we have to melt and flow in this meditation. Again, our eyes can be open or closed in this stage.
It is of 15 minutes. In this stage we can sit or stand but our eyes should be closed. Please note the change - first two stages eyes can be open or closed but from 3rd stage eyes has to be kept closed. With closed eyes be still from inside and witness whatever is happening inside the body-mind and outside activity which we observe with closed eyes. Witness the thoughts, feelings or any disturbance in the body or any noise from outside.
Witnessing is the key and will transform the energy. Moreover it is easier to witness now in this 3rd stage after doing shaking and dancing for 30 minutes. Stage is set for witnessing and be total in witnessing. It's very suitable time for having no-mind glimpses.
Its again for 15 minutes but no music is played in this stage. We have to lie down with our eyes closed and be still. If first three stages are done properly then silence will be outcome of it and in this stage we can enjoy that silence. In case we don't feel silent then continue the witnessing of body-mind but add more relaxation to your witnessing.
Few more points
- Kundalini Meditation takes away all the repressed energy, suppression, tension and relaxation becomes easier.
- Enjoy this meditation and don't be serious.
- According to Osho, if we force shaking then it becomes another physical exercise. Shaking the body is just a medium, in reality the shaking should shake our rock like being and the blocks in our psyche. So when shaking gains momentum then allow it to take control over you and possess you. Allow it to take you to unknown territories, So that shaking goes deep and clears much rubbish. Otherwise if we don't allow the shaking then it is just a bodily exercise.

The word meditation is also used for what is, more accurately, a meditation method. Meditative methods, techniques or devices are means by which to create an inner ambiance that facilitates disconnecting from the body mind so one can simply be. While initially it is helpful to put time aside to practice a structured meditation method, there are many techniques that are practiced within the context of one’s everyday life – at work, at leisure, alone and with others.
Methods are needed only until the state of meditation – of relaxed awareness, of consciousness and centering – has become not just a passing experience but as intrinsic to one as, say, breathing.
What is meditation?
Meditation is a simple process
Of watching your own mind.
Not fighting with the mind
Not trying to control it either
Just remaining there, a choice less witness.
Whatsoever passes you simply take note of it
With no prejudice for or against.
You don't call it names
That this should not come to my mind
That this is an ugly thought and
This is a very beautiful and virtuous thought.
You should not judge
You should remain non-judgmental
Because the moment you judge, you lose meditation.
You become identified.
Either you become a friend or you become a foe.
You create relationships.
Remaining unrelated with your thought process
Utterly unrelated, cool, calm
Watching whatsoever is passing.
And then a miracle happens:
Slowly slowly one becomes aware.
That less and less thoughts are passing.
The more alert you are, the less thoughts pass
The less alert you are, the more thoughts pass.
It is as if traffic depends on your awareness.
When you are perfectly aware
Even for a single moment, all thinking stops.
Immediately, there is a sudden stop
And the road is empty, there is no traffic.
That moment is meditation.

Osho developed new forms of active meditation. The best known is Dynamic Meditation which often starts with strenuous physical activity followed by silence and celebration. These were expected to lead the individual to overcome repression, lower their personal inhibitions, develop a "state of emptiness", and attain enlightenment. The person then would have "no past, no future, no attachment, no mind, no ego, no self." Anti-cult groups claimed that he urged his disciples to sever their connection to their families of origin. It is true that he felt that the institution of the family was out of date and that it should be replaced with alternative forms of community and ways of caring for children. However, he actually encouraged individual disciples to make peace with their families. Certainly a proposal to existence - that it is everyone's birthright to enjoy that same oceanic experience of true individuality. For that, Osho says, 'There is only one path, which goes inwards, where you will not find a single human being, where you will only find silence, peace.'
A conclusion? There are no full stops in the Osho vision, but a helping hand towards understanding ourselves: 'I would like to say to you: Science is the ultimate value. And there are only two kinds of sciences: one, objective science, that decides about the outside world; and two, subjective science.
