Book Discussion-Roadside Picnic

*****Date changed due to a scheduling conflict at the Ivy*****

Join us in March to read this Soviet-Era classic, now back in print after nearly 30 years, with material previously expunged by the Soviet government.

An event called the "visitation" has occured in a dozen locations around the worlds.  Aliens land and after two day leave, permanently altering the zones they landed in and leaving behind valuable and dangerous artifacts.

The Ivy will have copies availible at a 10% discount to "Other Worlds" Members.

      Are you building skynet?

Since FRC is about teaching / motivating high school students, I believe the appropriate question is: Are THEY going to build Skynet? Cue ominous music.

Though that'd be more likely if stuff like http://xkcd.com/689/ wasn't illegal. Shame.

Hey all, I finished the book, and just rented the movie that's based on the book--Stalker. It's only available by disc through Netflix, but I thought I'd mention its existence in case anyone wants to discuss the merits of the film adaptation :)

Roadside Picnic provoked a lot of deep discussion, probably because of how the authors left story elements open-ended, intimated larger themes, and outlined characters so that they were both interesting and open to interpretation. The book was positively received by every attendee, which is surprisingly a first for meetings I've attended. On top of that, I got to meet a bunch of interesting people I hadn't met before, so all together, it was an enjoyable evening!
