The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker - Caroline Taking Lead

The Golem And The Jinni: A Novel
by Helene Wecker

**New Info Added May 29th.***

Please note that in order to accommodate the excellent idea Caroline had to hold this event at the Mud Oven, the venue requires a minimum expenditure on their crafting items (for materials, paint, firing etc.) of $25.00. I am adding this as a mandatory fee for the event to make sure Caroline doesn't get stuck with any unnecessary cost.

SO.... if you are planning on attending the event please note that you will be required to bring the $25. Please use MEETUP to confirm your RSVP if you are planning to join us, that way we know if we have enough paying members to accommodate the minimum.

Thanks!

Your Supreme Dictator.

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | April 15, 2013 | Trade Paperback In The Golem and the Jinni, a chance meeting between mythical beings takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turn-of-the-century New York.

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life to by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic and dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899.

Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free

Ahmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable, Helene Wecker''s debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.

Ladies, looking ahead to September, when I'm doing the James Bond book *Casino Royale*: I have a DVD of the movie remake, starring hunky Daniel Craig. Before then, I'd really like to invite you to a "Girls' Movie Night" at my place, so we can watch the film & drink wine & drool at Daniel! What do you think: is there any evening in August (or a Sunday afternoon, I guess) when a bunch of us can get together? I have no plans yet, what about you guys?

Hi Marie, I am wondering if I could borrow your book copy of Golem and the Jinni? I have been on hold forever with the library and still only number 35 in line. Maybe you could bring it to our June 2 meetup?

    May 18

    • Marie

Hi Laura, I only have a kindle version. Do you have a kindle?

      May 29

    • laura r.

no I don't, I am still hoping for that library copy! Caroline offered me her audio version too, thanks, will see if I get the library one in time.

  • Marie

Caroline, I've started listening to the audio version of The Golem and the Jinni and loving it! (For some reason I thought it was a horror story and was reluctant to start but it doesn't seem to be that at all.)

    • Marie

I also have the text version.

      May 18

    • Caroline

Marie I am glad you are enjoying it, I especially liked the narrator they choose for this, he has that old world charm. I do not like horror so I will never choose one.... rest assured :)

    A note from Caroline:

    Hi All,

As I mentioned at the last book group I am thinking of having The Golem and the Jinni book choice evening on 7 July at the Mud oven on bank Street. As the Golem is made of clay and the Jinni from fire I thought it might be nice to add a hands on element to the book club.

We can have a private room and you choose your ceramic and paint it. They allow food on the premises and soft drinks but do not have an alcohol license. There are numerous pubs in the vicinity so we could pop in afterwards.

Here is the link. The cost of the ceramic is in about the $20.00 dollar mark. This includes paint and firing. I can collect for anyone who cannot make it out there themselves.

http://mudoven.com/how-it-works/ Please let me know asap who is interested in this as a book club venue for that evening.

    TTFN, Caroline
