Established in Oct 2012, looking for like-minded Ottawa ontario book-geeks as members for monthly discussions on all kinds of literature, but a strong slant to the Fiction genre as requested by founding members. This is a very informal, low-stress group and all we ask is that people try and read the book and come prepared to talk about their perceptions/opinions, good or bad. The goal I have aimed for with this group is to be pushed out of my comfort zone a bit and read/discuss books that I normally would never have picked. I have been routinely surprised along the way by new authors as have others in the group.
As of December 5th 2012 (the "inaugural" meeting of the group) the club came up with the following guidelines for our meetups:
Meetings will be on the first Monday of the Month but can be modified if vacations or holidays interfere.
Book and venue selection will rotate through each member on a monthly basis. This is the best way to ensure that at least once, each member will be able to select a book that is dear to their heart as well as a venue that is convenient for them. You don't HAVE to lead a discussion if you choose not to.
You can volunteer to head up a discussion once you have attended at least one previous meeting.
People that select the book for a given month will also select the venue and head up the discussion for that month.
Current book selections can be found in the calendar. If a month is not selected or a book picked yet you can always volunteer to be the facilitator for that month and select the book and venue!
Generally, Fiction will be the preference for books selected though if voted on by members we can add non-fiction as the requests arise and are voted on.
Books will be "Adult" (vs children or young reader) and it was requested that we stay away from books such as "Twilight" or any other such genre. Trying to stay away from anything too overtly religious, political or self-help (So "The Secret" is out)
No books can be selected out of series. Members want to read such books in order so please don't suggest a book that is "8 out of a series of 10" unless it is a stand-alone story in itself.
No length limit on books suggested. Just make sure it can be read in a month by the average reader.
If you RSVP, please COME TO THE MEETING. If have RSVP'd and have to drop out, no problem, just please change your status on the website to make room for other members who may wish to fill your spot.
Please give a book at least the first 50 pages before you decide to abandon it if it's not your cup-of-tea. And if you didn't/couldn't read the book... no problem! Come anyway! The group is also meant to be a social outing for book-minded people. You can share why you didn't like the book.
Car-pooling is available and encouraged, please let other members know if you need a ride or can offer one to any of the meetups.
A lot of members are on the Goodreads website (www.goodreads.com) my own personal profile on that site is Leto1212 if you want to "friend" me there.
The discussion area on Meetup seems a little limited in functionality so I have also opened up a facebook site to compliment the group and allow us more room to dicsuss the books with people that couldn't attend the actual face to face meeting. The facebook site is located at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/OttawaBookClub
