Monthly Meeting - Web Design, UI & UX, Development, Mobile and more

Hi everyone,

Hope you all are well and getting ready for the winter season. I apologize that past summer - fall was busy for me and I was unable to host meetings for a while.  But here we are again!

Our topic will be focus on design practice this month as I was requested.

Title of Keynote: Large Background Image in Web Design

About the keynote:

Big background images are extremely trendy in modern web design.  You will find dozen of creative examples around the web which illustrate this technique.   Consider the idea for captivating landing pages, portfolios, as even company websites are using specialized full screen background photos.  In this keynote I want to put together a few solid techniques for building big, oversized background images.

The Speaker: Osamu Wakabayashi

6:30 - 7:00 pm: Meet and greet/Networking
7:00 - 7:45 pm: Presentation by Osamu Wakabayashi

Thanks BitHeads, Osamu, Matt, ... great initiative. A room filled with knowledge.

Some topics that interest me for future meetings:
    > How to use Google Anayltics to measure the effectiveness of your Webste? - Matt hint hint
    > Using custom fonts to provide scalable images for web and apps. Fontawesome is awesome but would like my own character set. I create the artwork for anytune.us with Inkscape (which is great) however other tools have advantages including exporting @2x & @3x versions for multiple images and in more formats (png, svg, ObjectiveC). Does anyone have any experience/opinions on:
Sketch, Affinity.serif.com, iDraw, PaintCode or others?

Thanks Richard. Interesting tools. In my case I want to replace the letters with the button icons of my app and use them in the app, on the web page and the user documentation.

Maybe you want, FontCreator, or FontForge or TypeTool. I believe these can take your Adobe Illustrator vectors and create fonts for you.

It was my first time attending such meeting, had a good time and met great people. however, it was a little bit disappointing to me. I thought it will be more informative and to have better and more clear answers to the questions that have been raised in the discussion.
I'm looking forward to the next one :)

Each Meetup is different. At times, presenters have given very in depth technology uses, Web Fonts for example. SEO for another, the presenter was the senior technology guy from Trip Advisor. By all means make a suggestion to the organizers for a topic or two.

Great event last night - I enjoyed the various responses to the question "what size". I was the one that asked opinions about paralax and SEO - as I suspected, it appears not to be search friendly right off the bat but I have not finished reading the Moz article yet - here is the link if anyone else is interested. http://moz.com/blog/parallax-scrolling-websites-and-seo-a-collection-of-solutions-and-examples

I am going to put it to the test on my site ;-)

Great meet up tonight. If you are interested, this article talks about the CSS that you need to ensure the full screen image renders properly without issues such as white space, scroll bars, etc. Good discussions on this page:

Wish I could be there. I have missed many meetups since you moved venues. Unfortunately the meetups always fall on the same Wednesday as work meetings. I hope one day to return. Please send any materials and information my way - very interested in this topic.

Hey everyone! Thought I would share a simple Wordpress plugin I released a few weeks ago: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-notes-widget/ . I'm adding auto posting to Facebook/Twitter at the moment. I'm interested in getting some feedback.

Osamu ..I have been away from the meetup because life after retirement has proven to be more difficult than going to work everyday, would like to sit in again if I may, Don.

Hi Don, I haven't seen you for a long time and hope things are okay with you. Please swing by when you have the time.

Thanks Osamu for the reply. My work now is greater than ever in my career, owning your own business has proven to be more than I had ever thought. I will like to attend the next meetup and see you all.

Hi everyone - I'd like to share with the group about a workshop that I'll be holding near the end of the month; Local SEO. If you're a small business or you work with small businesses owners, you may enjoy this one. In this workshop, I'll be giving an introduction to local search, what makes up the local search ecosystem, how to rank higher than your competitors in your niche, and more. I've extended the early bird until this Friday and there's only two spots left. You can find the details of my workshop here: http://steerup.com/training/local-seo/ Thanks for your time! -Jackson
