While we're on the subject of image manipulation, I suspect that there are some who make use of vector drawing applications, possibly even Visio (quite pricey).

DraftSight, is a 2D CAD tool, it reads and writes AutoDesk files. Inkscape is similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw and others. Both of these very capable applications are free.

I usually recommend Pixlr to newbies. It's pretty amazing! It follows Photoshop's UI conventions, and it's free. Pixlr runs entirely in the browser with flash (no plugins), and I use it myself when I don't have Photoshop handy.

It won't open RAW images, but it'll handle some pretty huge JPEGs, so it's handy for making crops and tweaking colours, fixing red-eye and basic things. Even the cloning tool is pretty solid.
Autodesk bought them a year or two ago in a rash of web app buyouts, which makes me suspect they see the browser as an eventual destination for their 3d modelling suites.

Hi,

Someone asked yesterday for recommendations on a simple photo editing application. I immediately pointed to GIMP, but on second thought GIMP isn't really simple, it's just a free and open-source Photoshop. There's still a learning curve involved with the tools it provides. I love it and know it pretty well now, but mostly because I've toyed around with it for some time.

However, if you want something simple, then I would point you to the Picasa desktop application, made by Google. It gives you the type of quick editing tools that you find on most mobile picture apps.

I used it years ago, and it was pretty good at the time. I can't comment on the latest version.
