Brett's Short Fiction Critique Circle - Meeting 2

I've gone all papal and issued a bull. Next meetup and sitdown will be Tuesday the 19th at 7 PM in the atrium of the Minto Suites Hotel.
Ken and Kat have placed work on the altar. I will post a re-up of the same thing I put up the last time, this time with edits in response to everyone's kind criticism.
Come on out and have fun.

Okay - I am so sorry I was not there tonight - I so wanted to critique and be critiqued - so here is the saga - my brother came into town and I took him on a hike to Gatineau Park - we ended up getting more than a little lost and 20 km later finally found our parking at 7pm! Needless to say I am one hurting unit (pride, body et al) - I will post individual critiques of the posted writings - sorry I missed it folks - this is a great group! Kat

Getting lost on a hiking trail can be a very scary thing, especially at this time of year. On the bright side- will make great story material later on. Glad that you two are safe and sound and look forward to seeing you next time.

Thanks Sharon and you are so right about the foundation for a story - I had one forming in my head that forced me not to think about building lean-to's and rationing our 2 cereal bars and water!

    I scored. Thanks, critiquestas.

I have to pass on this meetup now. It's not clear to me from this MU description how it works. We are all critiquing the same short fiction? Who does it belong to please? And why are we doing this? Also, where can a new person to this meetup find the short fiction? I may try to attend another time. Thanks.

Thank you for the explanation Averill. :)

Isabella and Gita - Brett runs this circle and I run another for Long(er) Fiction. You're welcome to join either! They run pretty much the same. There may be more critique circles upcoming, so keep your eyes open! I look forward to seeing you both come out :-)

I'm sorry I have to bow out tonight; my partner had a small accident and I don't want to leave here alone today.

yes, I'm going now to try an upload a short story: "A Fish out of Water." Will I need a password or something.

And here I was thinking that you're all coming up with fun nicknames for each other... ;-)

      Yes, I'm planning to attend.

At the last meeting, a few people asked me to share the simple critique outline I used. I've uploaded it to the Meeting 2 dropbox under the name "critique_checklist.pdf". The bullet points are from here:
    http://www.crayne.com/howcrit.html
I strongly recommend this link - I like to keep it open as I think about a story. Helps me focus my thoughts and make a better critique.

Thanks to Averill for the luddite help - the password for the story Arrival is - katarrival

    November 14, 2013

  • Kat C.

    PLEASE HELP THE LUDDITE
Yup - Arrival be mine - but I was trying to be all professional and gave it a password - and guess what - I can't remember it - I did post the password in note when I put it up, but now I cannot figure out how to access old posts in this forum -

Kat - In "Past MeetUps" (at the bottom of the "home" page), you can access the pages of older meetings. Here's a comment you posted in Brett's first Meetup. I hope it's what you're looking for:

"Likewise Brett - I have uploaded a story into the meeting 2 folder - ArrivalCritiquecircle - pass - katarrival
I would enjoy a critique - thanks in advance - Kat"

Our Dropbox has only one piece in it at this time. (Is Arrival yours, Kat? If so, we need the password to crack open the pdf.)

Aha, so I am looking at the wrong one as mine has two plus my contribution..

Interested, but cannot attend this date next week; having two readings that week of my just published novel In Times Wanting, Wed. Nov 20, at Les Saisons Cafe in Old Chelsea 5pm, next day in Kemptville Library Thursday 7:30pm, as well as a book signing upcoming Sat. Nov 11, 11am-1pm at Books on Beechwood, so just too busy in one week, being outside Ottawa, Venosta - but wanting the short fiction sessions now, so will hope to attend the next session.
How do I get the stories to download?

    November 10, 2013

Send an email address to [masked]. I will return an invitation to the Dropbox.

Our Dropbox now has two documents in it.

For clarity, our Dropbox is dubbed "Brett's Critique Circle".

In "Brett's Critique Circle" you will find two folders.
The first is labelled "Meeting 1 Materials - Closed"
The second is labelled "Meeting 2 Materials"

In the second folder labelled "Meeting 2 Materials" you will find (as of this writing) two documents.
The first is named "Arrival~.pdf" and the second is named "Family~.docx".

If you;re looking at anything else, you're not looking in our Dropbox.

When you speak of the altar, do you mean the dropbox? And what is the process, do we read and make comments at the get together or comment in writing? Thanks.

    November 10, 2013

    • Brett M.

Yes and yes, and yes, some provide written criticism but it isn't required.

      November 13, 2013

  • Isabella

Are we expected to bring anything to this meeting please? Also, is there a charge? Thanks.

    November 13, 2013

    • Brett M.

Bring your sunny disposition and your "reaction" to the works posted to our dropbox. (If you need access to the Dropbox, send me an email address and will return an invitation to same.

      November 13, 2013

    • Brett M.

No charge at all. There is a coffee shop in the atrium should you wish to partake but note that it closes at 7.

I volunteer Tuesday nights, alas. Really hoping to make one of these!
