WELCOME TO OTTAWABABEL!
In Ottawa we have lots of Meetup groups dedicated to one particular language or where Meetups take place in coffee shops or parks. OttawaBabel aims to provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere in a bar environment where speakers of many different languages can come together to practice speaking a different language in a real-world context with real people and make new friends with people from all over the world!
Since our gatherings take place in a bar, there is usually music playing and we mix and mingle together. Our goal is to have a night-out, with an international crowd!
HOW IT WORKS
The idea of the group is that you give help to the group (helping those who are learning your native language) and you get help from the group (you are helped by others who speak the language you want to practice). This way everyone benefits!
When you arrive, just introduce yourself to Giorgio, Samantha or James and they will introduce you to others who speak the language you want to practice to get you started. It's fun and FREE! You only pay for what you order at the bar. PLEASE REMEMBER TO TIP YOUR BARTENDER! (leave about $1 extra per drink that you buy). See the pointers on "How to Babel" below!
HOW LONG IT LASTS
We get started every Wednesday at 7pm and the group is usually there until at least 10pm, but you can arrive and leave at whatever time you like. Check out the calendar (http://www.ottawababel.com/#calendar) to see the events we have coming up and to RSVP.
If you have any comments, questions, problems, concerns or ideas, just talk to Giorgio about it. We will do our best to make sure you have a positive experience! Everyone is welcome!
Remember, this group is a hobby for us; we run it just for fun, we love it and we hope you will love it too!
How to Babel:
1. Be open-minded and respectful
We are a very diverse group. You'll meet people from all over the world and all cultures. Enjoy the chance to have the international experience in Ottawa! When you register please list your first name as a minimum since we all want to be on friendly terms.
2. Tip your bartender!
Although it's common not to tip in many cultures, it is very much a part of Canadian culture, so remember to leave a tip for your bartender, even if you buy a drink directly from the bar.
3. Lifetime membership! On joining we ask for a $5 contribution to the costs of running the group. This is a one time only fee (less than the cost of a drink). For students, unemployed or people visiting Ottawa for a short period of time we do not ask for a contribution but for all others it would be greatly appreciated.
4. RSVP for each meeting! f you have a smartphone please look for the app (android/apple) and download. It makes it easy to see what upcoming meetings there are as well as RSVP. We do ask that members RSVP for each meeting as a mark of courtesy to other members and our hosting venues. The app also allows members to message other members. Please use this function appropriately and do not message other members without their consent.
5. Ask the organizers!
If you have any questions, concerns, problems or ideas, please talk to Giorgio, James or Samantha about it!
Practice a language and meet people from around the world for free!
