As people interested in personal growth and things like the law of attraction, we are told to focus on what we DO want, instead of what we don’t want. This definitely works…except when it doesn’t. I spent years trying to pretend I didn’t have fears our doubts, and I wound up subtly frustrated all the time. Or worse, I’d make myself wrong for having “negative” emotions, which just makes them stick around longer, since what we resist persists.
So what do we DO when ugly emotions surface? As a society, we’ve only been taught 2 options: feel our emotions and drown in them or do/say something we’ll regret later, OR stuff them down and pretend we don’t have them.
I’d like to present a third option that’s helped me reach abiding peace with what I’m feeling, and access to deeper wisdom in the moment. Through training with many teachers, I learned to “be with” emotions, with full presence, hearing the message underneath, and then letting them move through me like the weather. Emotions are energy in motion: if we really let them move through us without holding on, they pass through us like a wave.
I believe emotions are signposts that point us towards our deepest needs, values, and purpose in life. They have a message for us, and when they feel heard, they change into energy that is fuel for positive action in our lives. You’ll leave with tools that give you access to transforming emotions.
