a Novice ride: The Keizer Iris Festival: 30 miles, really flat. Honest!

An easy ride down in the south Willamette Valley. 30 miles. Flat as Kansas. We'll ride through Willamette Mission State Park and take the Wheatland Ferry to the West side of the Willamette. We'll loop around Grand Island (second largest island in the Willamette; Sauvie is the largest). Then back across the river and ride back to Schreiner's Iris Garden for the Keizer Iris Festival. They say the iris's peak in May, plus there's a beer tasting and Mt. Angel brats at the garden, too.

Who will like this ride: Improving novices ready to get out of Portland and do a quiet, scenic 30 mile ride in the country. Traffic is low this far away from the city. Grand Island is sort of like Sauvie Island except without cars.

Ride leader: Adam [masked] , Cell (503)[masked]

Meet and Greet: Sunday May 19 at 9:00 am at Schreiner's Iris Garden

Wheels Rolling 9:30 SHARP - Please don't show up at the last minute and expect us to wait for you.

The Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2446248

Pace: Social and relaxed. We will ride as a group and make sure the slower riders in the group feel welcome. We'll probably average 10 mph, plus the time to ride the ferry. On the standard ride rating scale below, this is A-1 or maybe B-1 depending on who shows up.

Bring: Water and food for energy - enough for about 3 hours of riding. These roads are pretty rural -- I don't think there are any stores enroute. Have at least one spare tube (the one that FITS your bike!) and a pump or cartridge (one that FITS your valves!!). I can fix a flat, but only if you bring the right size spare tube for your bike.

Weather Cancellation Policy. It's May. Plan on good weather.

******************************************************

Mandatory for all riders.

Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement and not a request. Obey traffic laws and remember you’re a representative of the greater cycling community and should conduct yourself that way on the road. Represent us well!

Have their ride in good working order and bring a flat kit & the right size spare tube on all rides. If there is an issue with proper working or lack of equipment you may be asked to sit the ride out.

Please ask for help if you are ill equipped prior to the ride, we will help if we can!

We really did have a terrific group, and Adam picked a nice route. Is there a way to contact individuals privately to exchange contact info?

Adam did a great job of leading us through the park and on the roads. I enjoyed the ride and all the good people who went along. It was my first ride with this group and I look forward to many more.

Great ride, beside I almost cramping up at the last 10miles. I guess I am way out of shape (at least that is my excuse). Thank you to Roger and Tom to stay behind and sweep me along.

In case anyone is wondering -- yes, the ride is on. I work in Salem and my experience is that Salem is often a little warmer and drier than Portland. So if it's showering Sunday in Portland, we might have better weather down there!

    Hello Adam,

I am doing Reach The Beach the day before with the MC and there are already hints that it will be a major speedfest. A nice quiet social ride the day after sounds very good to me. If you would like to open this ride up to more people I would be happy to ride sweep and support your ride any way I can.

I am beginning to think that hills, in any form, are the biggest deterrent to signing up for rides. More and more, I see that rides advertised as "flat" bring on sign-ups more quickly and in greater numbers.

Thanks for posting this - I did the route yesterday amid the showers. I took a wrong turn at the end of the island loop and added a couple of miles and a déjà vu moment... Great timing to see spectacular flowers at Schreiners!
