Newberg-Yamhill-Carlton Ramble (33 miles)

  • This location is shown only to members

The Ride: This scenic loop is 33 miles over mostly country roads with about 1800 feet of elevation change overall (lots of rollers).  Because of the hills, it is a harder ride than my recent Banks-Vernonia or Gervais-Wheatland Ferry rides. We will make brief pit stops in Yamhill (mile 15), and Carlton (mile 21). No one will get dropped, and we'll wait for everyone at the turns, but please make sure you meet the target rider profile below.

Rain Policy: If is raining hard ahead of the ride I will cancel. If it is only overcast or raining lightly I will stick with the plan, but feel free to bail if you are nervous about the forecast.

Target Riders: Up-and-coming intermediates who are comfortable with the distance (33 miles) and pace (14-16 mph on the flats).  This ride is not a good choice for true novices.

Logistics:  Meet and greet @ 8:30.  Wheels roll at 9:00 sharp.  We honor the prompt, so please don't be late and make everyone wait - we probably won't.

Out Spoke'n Rules of the Road:

When you joined Out Spoke'n you agreed to the Waiver of Liability (you can see it under the Pages tab at the top of the web page).  Under that Waiver, no one is responsible for your personal safety or that of your equipment but you. Your RSVP means that you continue to acknowledge and accept that responsibility. For everyone's sake, please ride safely.

Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement and not a request.

Always bring plenty of water, snacks for energy, a flat repair kit, including a spare tube that FITS, a pump or, at a minimum, a threaded CO2 cartridge.  Sunscreen, a credit card and a little cash to buy refreshments and to reimburse a good Samaritan who might have to provide you with anything like a tube ($5) or a CO2 cartridge ($3).

Mandatory for all riders: Obey traffic laws and remember you’re a representative of the greater cycling community and should conduct yourself that way on the road.  Please represent us well.

All riders must have their rides in good working order and must bring a flat kit & spare tube on all rides. If there is an issue with proper working or lack of equipment you may be asked to sit the ride out. Please ask for help if you are ill equipped prior to the ride. We will try to help.

I am sorry that I missed everyone-I lost the address off my phone on the way there-I drover all over Chehalem-the runners and walkers did not seem to know where the school was and by the time it got to 8:35 I figured you all had left. My phone to the internet to Outspoke'n does not recognize me as a member and so I could not get the address off the web site-frustrating-hope you all had a good ride-I apologize if you had to wait for me-dd

That was unfortunate as we needed to run get a helmet and didn't leave until much later.

To be clear, 8:30 was the "meet and greet" time, and 9:00 was the "wheels roll" time. That was in the ride description, and follows a convention that some (not all) ride leaders follow. We did leave shortly after 9:00 due to the helmet delay.

Fun ride today. It was nice to meet other cyclists and the weather was great for the fall. Loved the stops at the rustic Yamhill store and popular food cart in Carlton.

Thanks for waiting for me at the turns Roger. It was nice to ride on some different roads for a change. Very rural and scenic and the hills
weren't that bad at all. Enjoyed meeting the new people. Thanks for leading and I will see you on the Verboort ride.

I decided to do the Bob ride instead. A longer and faster ride. Would have been nice to see some of you again, maybe next time. Thanks for posting the ride Roger.

Interesting route Roger. I've never ridden on Rockyford rd. before, not sure if it is paved. There are other paved roads we can take if that is the case.

Pete, good call. I drove the route and Rockyford has more gravel than I remembered. I shortened the route, and updated the map. Thanks again.

Sorry you had to drive out there to check it out. There are some roads we can take to make the ride longer if anyone is interested tomorrow.

Awesome, a ride in my backyard and it starts earlier. I can ride from my house. See you all Saturday.

What's this "9 spots available" crap, boyo? You don't want 38 people and counting on this ride too? :) Still nursing the shoulder back to health, or I'd ride. Still unsure about the Verboort ride but that's still 9 days off.

Verboort is the exception - access to fresh sausage and sauerkraut is a right, not a privilege. ;^)
