Great Camp Sagamore | Raquette Lake, NY

  • September 27, 2013 · 2:00 PM

We are finalizing the attendee list - if you are interested, contact the organizer (Christian) directly.

Do you want to feel like a Vanderbilt? Come for a week end at Great Camp Sagamore, the wilderness estate of the Vanderbilt Family from 1901 to 1954.

Where is it located? In the Adirondaks, 2h1/2 north of Albany.

More info:

In free time enjoy canoeing Sagamore Lake, hiking 20 miles of trails, playing lawn games, sitting at a campfire. Porch sitting is also a time-honored activity. Evening include a traditional campfire at the lean-to. Take time for star-gazing.

Great Camp Sagamore is one of the very few original camp where you can stay (unless you know someone who has one, or can stay at The Point ... in that case we need to talk!).

Price includes two nights double occupancy lodging, as well as meals (buffet style in the dining hall - beer and wine are availble for purchase).  Many dates available. Private baths are available for an additional charge. $299/person/2 nights.

To make it happen, we will need to combine the following:

- Departure on Friday during the morning - return on Sunday night.

- Double occupancy for cost indicated.

- Cost does not include extra activity such as ADK Museum (highly recommended) or transportation.

- Car pooling / Drivers / Cars to keep cost low.

It's a lot of conditions, and not cheap but Sagamore location is just unique. Contact me with any question, or if you have interest.

If we answer quickly we can all be in the same building.

More info:

Day 1
Check-in begins at 4pm. Enjoy your buffet dinner at 6:00 (6:30 on Fridays) in our exquisite dining hall and get acquainted with Great Camp Sagamore in a short orientation.  Watch “No Velvet Ropes” for a glimpse of Vanderbilt history and historic preservation.

Day 2

After lunch (T, Th, Sat in season) you are invited to take the 2pm excursion aboard the W.W. Durant.  Dinner is at 6pm at Great Camp Sagamore. Evenings include a traditional campfire at the lean-to. Take time for star-gazing.

When I checked the landscape pictures from the hike to the fire tower and comparing it to google map. I was surprised to realize I was looking right at Forked Lake in the short distance, a secluded camp site that I spent a memorable week with my dog Mabel. She had been gone for years yet this cosmic revisit brought tears to my eyes, even now writing this I am fighting back tears. I feel very grateful for experiencing this feeling of peace and love all over again. Thank you all for being there with me.

I am ready to go back! Thanks to all the drivers to make it possible to happen. We have worked on "world peace" this week end! Thanks for my award, will wear it proudly.

We are right on time for a great treat color wise! ...

For the cars targeting to arrive for the 1:30pm tour (Dan, Gautham and David (?)) ... park in the tour parking lot upon arrival (follow the signs). They will know (under my name / Out &About) that you are coming and you won't be charged. After the tour the cars can move down to the Conference Building and we can get checked in. As far as rooms, we have seven rooms: 5 with two twin beds, one with three beds and one with a double bed. So, depending on who's willing to share how, we might be able to make a couple singles. In term of hike ... Blue Mountain is a great hike with a wonderful view from the fire tower at the top, and, timewise, that would suit your plans well. It is a long mountain, but it's not bad. It's also very easy to find. Any last minute questions ... let me know soon!

More last minute questions and answers ... no need to pack bed sheets and towels (unless you have special preference), do pack for the weather (65-70 during the day, 38-40 at night), bring the wine and beer you wish, bring hiking outfit / camera / ... as you see fit - it's all very casual and informal outfits at all time.

Great meet & greet tonight - I hope it gave everyone a good start on the feel of the week end.

You are a "Yes I am sure I want to go" ... send me an email to confirm (with your full contact info if you haven't yet). Deadline: Saturday night so I can send the list to Sagamore. Once I have your "ok", I will put you on the "Yes" attending list.

2nd step will be for you to contact Sagamore for downpayment.

In term of additional costs .. we talked about on site wine /beer, museum / boat trip, sunday lunch and share of car cost (we hope to not need a rental but if there is, all non drivers will contribute).

Great to see interest for this Sagamore week end. As it's an overnight, I think it would be better if we know each other in advance (so you all have an option out before you pay if you can't stand someone! which I don't anticipate lol), and to organize rooms and cars. Would you be all available for after work coffee / drink on Monday Aug 20. I was thinking 6pm at Pershing Square at Grand Central. If it's too short notice, we can plan another time (earlier better).

Sagamore confirmed they don't charge tax as it's a non profit.

To facilitate registration, email me your name, address, phone number and email. Will send the list to the contact at Sagamore and you will just have to call them to pay the 25% deposit by Visa or Mastercard.

So far we have a few cars, but may be not enough for all ... we will need to see who would agree to be a driver. We can talk about that on Monday.

Monday won't work for many people - if everyone could send me their email / contact, will be in touch to schedule the meet & greet (and answer questions, to the extend I can).

What a wonderful idea. I've always wanted to do something like this but have postponed this kind of trip since , for me, it is not the kind of thing I would want to do alone and also have never been able to interest my friends in same. I eagerly await your decision/plan.

$299 cost (no tax as they are a non profit) if for double occupancy and shared hallway baths.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
