25th Annual Great Los Angeles River CleanUp

We are joining the Friends of the LA River (FoLAR) in their 25th Annual Great LA River CleanUp. Let's get to know our river.

Rains in the winter bring trash down the river from the San Gabriel foothills. Some of the trash makes it out to sea, but much of it stays in the river. Tujunga Wash is one of the largest natural flood plains in southern California. Haines Canyon is a concretized channel that opens into a riparian zone.

LOCATION:  Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority property behind homes where Haines Cyn dumps water into Big Tujunga Wash. West of Oro Vista St. North of Wentworth.

DIRECTIONS: Take the 210 Freeway and exit Sunland that will become Foothill, make a left on Oro Vista, make a left on Wentworth. Street Parking only on Wentworth, Westcott or Tujunga Valley Street. Entrance on Wentworth. Look for the FoLAR CleanUp Signs

PARKING: Street parking only. Signage will walk you in to the conserved parcel.

Good morning Nkem. I regretfully won't be able to attend the Big Tujunga Wash today. Hope it's a success.

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. Our river is blessed with much needed rainfall and will be even more so once we help her out today. See you soon!

Although we are expecting some light rain tonight, I just spoke with FoLAR and the word from the Army Corps of Engineers is that we will be clear by the morning. See you all tomorrow morning.

"If you need a little inspiration, here are three good reasons to get in on the fun:

    1. It’s all one water. Because the L.A. River flows right into the Pacific, all that uncollected litter harms aquatic creatures and the ecosystems of both the river and the sea. 2. You’ll be working toward a brighter future. Mayor Eric Garcetti supports a $1 billion river revitalization plan that would broaden and revamp an 11-mile stretch of waterway just north of downtown. In the meantime, community cleanups like La Gran Limpieza are one of the most powerful ways to help regenerate a precious natural resource.

    3. It’s National Community Service Month. Cleanups not only help the river—they help you, too. They’re a great get-together opportunity, and studies show that volunteering can do you good by fighting depression and keeping your heart healthy." I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
