Let's Hike Mount Tamalpais

undefined

-"The panorama from the 2,571-foot peak is breathtaking. On a clear day, view the Farallon Islands out to sea, the Marin County hills, Mount Diablo, San Francisco, and the hills and cities of the bay." -

This will be a 6 mile hike loop on Mount. Tamalpais with various degrees of incline. This hike has a moderate hiking level, which will be on established trails that can be rocky and steep in places. The elevation gain is up to 1000'.

Where we Meet:

We will be meeting at "Pantoll Ranger Station Park HQ parking lot". This parking lot is not very large so there will be limited available spaces. The fee for all day parking is $8.oo dollars cash.

An alternate to arrive at the Pantoll Ranger Station Park HQ parking lot, is to take the "Golden Gate Transit Route 61" from Manzanita Park and Ride; http://goo.gl/maps/eYAE7. This bus will arrive to the park and ride at 8:25am, please arrive 15min. early. This will be the only bus to get you to the meeting spot on time. It will depart from the Pantoll Ranger Station at 3:32pm. The bus fare should be $2.oo dollars each way. I've provided a link for you to verify the cost; http://goldengatetransit.org/fareprograms/. The Golden Gate Transit Route 61 schedule link is as follows; http://marintransit.org/routes/61.html

You may also carpool with someone driving to the parking lot at the ranger station or park and ride.

What food to bring:

Bring a brown bag lunch and plenty of water. Feel free to bring some snacks to eat along the way.

What shoes to wear:

Wear comfortable shoes with good tread. I recommend hiking shoes that protect your ankles. We will be hiking mostly off paved roads which are dirt and rocky trails.

Parking:

Much was covered above, however the Pantoll Ranger Station Parking lot fee is $8.oo dollars.

History:

We will be visiting the historical "Mountain Theater" which is an earthwork completed in 1930. This earthwork is constructed out of stone within the earth.

Dogs:

Dogs are not recommended.

Hey Cliff heres a suggestion, West Marin Stagecoach bus has round trip service directly to the planned site. It should be the South 61 (Westbound) route. 1 to 2 dollars per person. The group could all park at the shopping ctr in Marin city and get shuttled up as a group. Bonus! You wont have to worry about parking. Check it out. Hope thats helpful.

    1 · January 29, 2013

    • Cliff S.

Hello Erika, The shopping mall is called Marin City Mall on Donahue Street and Terner drive. The 61 bus will arrive there at 8:20am. The Golden Gate Transit Route 61 schedule link is as follows; http://marintransit.o...

    For those aiming to take the bus to the site, there is a Golden Gate Transit Bus 61 that will arrive at the following locations and times;

    -Marin City Mall........................8:20am
    -Manzanita Park and Ride........8:25am

The bus fare should be $2.oo dollars each way. I've provided a link for you to verify the cost; http://goldengatetransit.org/fareprograms/. The Golden Gate Transit Route 61 schedule link is as follows; http://marintransit.org/routes/61.html

    Hello OA Family,

We have exactly six days left before our hike and I'm very excited to do this event. I just finished my pre-hike this Sunday and found that the bus/park and ride arrival time is actually 8:25am....not 8:44am. If you are planning to take the bus, be sure to arrive at the park and ride on time. I was told that the buses run on-time.

For those carpooling and parking at the Pantoll Ranger parking lot, I was told that the parking lots will fill up by 9:45 am so be sure to arrive early. There are other parking opportunities along the road, which are first come...first serve; near the Pantoll Ranger parking lot. You may also park at the Bootjack parking lot too for $8.00, which is down the road before the Pantoll Ranger parking lot. You will have a 10-15 min. walk along the main road to get to our meeting spot.

    March 18, 2013

  • Cliff S.

On my pre-hike, the weather was absolutely beautiful...clear skies. There will be two places were we will stop for a historical reference moment. Let me know if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (510)[masked] cell.

    Thanks,

    Cliff.

    March 18, 2013

Hi All, I'll be driving from Sunnyvale up to Mt Tam if anyone is interested.

    March 13, 2013

  • Anne

Is anyone else bringing children? My son has gotten bored on prior hikes when he is the only child. (I do wonder how anyone can be bored while hiking Mt. Tam!)

    March 13, 2013

  • Cliff S.

This event will be the best yet. We have a little over a week until we're off hiking this magnificent mountain. I want to make sure everyone is pre-arranging car-pooling arrangements or preparing for the bus ride to the site. This event will be a challenge for parking, so plan ahead. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at[masked]-cell

    Thanks,

    Cliff.

Hello OA family, I will be posting the map of our hiking route soon. Stay tuned.

    March 4, 2013

  • Cliff S.

Hello OA family, I hope you are as excited as I am for this event. There are a couple of things to keep in mind as we get closer to this event. 1) Please be on time...this event will start on time so we can end on time for those taking the bus from the carpool location. 2) Be sure to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks...we will be hiking at a high altitude. 3) Wear good shoes....we will be hiking on various surfaces, which will not be smooth. I look forward to seeing you all on hike day.
