African American National Parks Event at the Presidio

Please Join Outdoor Afro in conjunction with the Presidio of San
Francisco, as we celebrate African American National Park day!

In partnership with the National Park Service Staff, we will celebrate and honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers in the Presidio of San Francisco.

Schedule:

Please DO NOT RSVP until you are certain you can attend. We are trying to get an accurate account of RSVP's to expect.  Thank you for your understanding.

We will kick off the day with a historical presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers, given by National Park Service staff. Following their presentation, we will take a tour of Buffalo Soldier exhibits,
including the cemetery where several Buffalo Soldiers are laid to
rest. We will end the day with a short hike through the Presidio.

About African American National Parks Weekend:

It has been widely publicized the absence of African Americans in our National Parks. Through this grassroots project we hope to gain the attention of African Americans across the country, to show them the benefit of being out in nature, protecting and securing our vital natural resources. The story of the Buffalo Soldiers is but ONE, of many African American stories of contributions made to our National parks.

Yes, it was a wonderful event. I had a great time and learned a lot. It was great to see the event so well attended. This was my first opportunity to participate in an event, when I'm not travelling. Everyone was friendly and very welcoming. Glad I didn't miss it. Thanks to Teresa, Rue and Cliff for organizing a great event. I look forward to attending other events. Cheers!

Hi. For those of us who unfortunately couldn't attend, is there a website(s) we can view to get some of the history and info? I'd really like to read about the A-A connection to the Presidio. Thank you.

Mr. Powell's presentation was sooo good! He's a great speaker and knowledgeable historian. The Presidio park rangers were exceptionally hospitable. And Ranger Washington's tour was informative but also fun! It was a great experience! I had a great time and would love to do it again.

Amazing day & invaluable experience. Humbling & encouraging at same time to hear of the many achievements that took place despite the challenges. Such rich, often hidden history made even richer by special guests such as Mr Powell and the Buffalo Soldiers MC Club of Sacramento. Hard to convey in words...you had to be there...so glad my daughter & I went...Thank You Teresa et al!

Are dogs allowed at this event?

    June 21, 2013

    • Teresa B.

This is not an ideal event for dogs.

      1 · June 21, 2013

    • Rue M.

I would strongly advise against dogs because of the sensitivity of the site and the indoor movie portion.
