Please Join Outdoor Afro in conjunction with the Presidio of San
Francisco, as we celebrate African American National Park day!
In partnership with the National Park Service Staff, we will celebrate and honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers in the Presidio of San Francisco.
Please DO NOT RSVP until you are certain you can attend. We are trying to get an accurate account of RSVP's to expect. Thank you for your understanding.
We will kick off the day with a historical presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers, given by National Park Service staff. Following their presentation, we will take a tour of Buffalo Soldier exhibits,
including the cemetery where several Buffalo Soldiers are laid to
rest. We will end the day with a short hike through the Presidio.
Please bring a signed copy of the waiver:http://files.meetup.com/2045381/REQUIRED%20Outdoor%20Afro%20Trip%20Waiver.pdf
For directions to the Presidio by car or public Transportation:
The Presidio Visitor Center is located next door to the Walt Disney Family Museum on the Main Post in the Presidio of San Francisco. For directions using GPS, Google Maps, MapQuest, etc., please use this intersection as an address: (don't forget the zip code!)
Lincoln Boulevard and Montgomery Street, San Francisco, CA 94129.
There is some construction underway; follow any detours accordingly.
The Walt Disney Family Museum has an excellent website with detailed directions to the Presidio and transit options:http://www.waltdisney.org/drive-bus-bike
Parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Presidio. Allow extra time to find a space and walk to the Visitor Center. Please note that there is a large event elsewhere on the Main Post on Sat, June 22nd, so some parking may be limited.
See the below link for a map of parking lots on the Main Post of the Presidio. We recommend using the large parking lot just south of building 211 on this map (behind the fire station, just east of Lincoln Boulevard and Graham Street). Please note that the Presidio Visitor Center is Building 105, adjacent to the Main Parade Ground on Montgomery Street.
The Presidio Visitor Center phone number is (415) 561-4323.
About African American National Parks Weekend:
It has been widely publicized the absence of African Americans in our National Parks. Through this grassroots project we hope to gain the attention of African Americans across the country, to show them the benefit of being out in nature, protecting and securing our vital natural resources. The story of the Buffalo Soldiers is but ONE, of many African American stories of contributions made to our National parks.
