Spider Love Hike

Okay Anderson "Spider" Silva is no longer the king of MMA, but the king of spiders has never been a human. Its always been the tarantula if you consider size alone. Luckily we have a member of the tarantula group right here in the bay area. And this is the only time of year one can see them walking around. Most of the year they stay in their burrows and hunt at nite. But from early September to late October they come out during the day to mate. On this trip we'll take a moderate 2 mile roundtrip hike into the lower hills of Mt. Diablo to see if we can find this Aphonopelma species. and learn about its environment and behavior. If you have 'arachnophobia' this would be a good opportunity to work on it. And if you don't, well this will be a good time to learn more. There is a $6. parking fee.

What you'll need to bring: Because of the time of year, water. 2 bottles if you need, there are water spigots at  the parking/picnic area. Nice pair of hiking shoes. A magnifying glass for extra fun.

There is no guarantee we will see spiders but the chances are better than 70%. And there are plenty of other cool things to learn about.

Loved seeing the captive spiders and the tarantulas in the wild. Clay knows a lot of nature stuff! Good times. Would go again next year.

Thanks for the support guys. It means a lot. And as far as the spiders goes, someone once told me "If you're not uncomfortable you're not growing". I think you guys are growing.

Thanks again Clay! I had a blast! I've been bragging about my walk with danger all weekend - even though I chickened out on the spider holding. :).

I pasted the address that came up on google maps for the Mitchell Canyon entrance. I could not edit the address so "fire" was locked in. People get their info from many different sources: I don't know what you knew or what you understood when. I am just saying that if I had known....

Wish I could've been there; unfortunately, the park is 90 minutes from San Jose. Does the same species live in the South Bay and, if so, might Clay or another OA leader host a spider hike down here?

    October 5, 2013

    • Clay

Hi Renee, thats actually doable. I know there are populations 'down there'. We'll have to look into that for next year. Thank you

Cool Beans! Once again this OA trip was almost magical for me. The positive people came and made it flow in the right direction. People got to work on their 'arachnophobia' (someone even kinda kissed one!!) There were questions about Black widow's and scorpions. We saw spiders in the wild. And we even got to see bats and poorwills flitting about in the twilight. Big ups for Outdoor Afros!!!

Once you drive through the entrance where u pay, keep driving forward, you will drive right into the parking lot.

    October 5, 2013

    • Christina

Is it the first parking lot on your left after you pay?

      October 5, 2013

    • Teresa B.

      No. The next one.

We are at the south gate. Are we meeting at the north gate? Is there somewhere we can meet the group because we will be late?

    October 5, 2013

    • Macha R.

I'm near the south gate too in the rock city live oak lot just inside the park

We're driving to the north gate. It has to be there.

Thank you Teresa, yes the park is open $6.00 to park. We didn't see any spiders walking around last trip and there is no guarantee this trip either. But the weather is glorious today so there is a much better chance. I will have some interesting things to see also; and I can pretty much guarantee we will have a good time no matter what the spiders are doing.

Will the park be open? The gov shutdown has closed everything, even the golden gate park website.

      State parks are still open.

Hi ALL - looking forward to this one. The rain kept me home last time.

From what I've been 'taking in' from the media, it hasn't effected the area we will be hiking in yet! I'm crossing my fingers and watching the news for the next few days. I'll also go up there this weekend and observe the damage. It should be interesting to say the least.

Do you think the fire currently burning in the park will have an impact on whether or not we see any spiders or any other living things?
