RAIN OR SHINE A Hike to Honor Harriet

Hey Outdoor Afros!

We hope you've been enjoying  Black History Month 2014 as much we have! But we all know that Black History Month is every month, right? And everyday presents an opportunity to celebrate and honor our African American trailblazers!

That's why we are so excited to partner with her sister friends at GirlTrek, to bring you a special event. Monday, March 10 is Harriet Tubman Day, signed in to law by the United States Congress on March 13, 1990.

To commemorate her accomplishments and her legacy, we invite you to join us on an after work hike in Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve!

The Hike
The beautiful rolling hills, eucalyptus forest and the volcanic preserve at Sibley make it one of Outdoor Afro's favorite places to hike! This hike will be mostly on unpaved trails with moderate elevation gains.  We will hike for approximately 2-3 miles.

As with all of our hikes, we encourage anyone with a positive attitude and good knowledge of their physical abilities to join.  The trip leader will be keeping a steady pace and we will have a leader at the back of the group to make sure everyone stays on route.

About Girl Trek's Honoring Harriet Call to Action

GirlTrek is a movement of Black women across the country  who are committed to reclaiming our health and taking back our neighborhoods through walking. We are inspired by women like Harriet Tubman to make bold change one step at a time.  This year we are hosting a weekend-long celebration in Harriet Tubman’s honor, where women will host Harriet house parties, walk 100 minutes, join in virtual prayer, and wear “superhero blue” on Monday  March 10th, Harriet Tubman Day.  Last year, 15,000 Black women joined GirlTrek in honoring Harriet Tubman. For more information on GirlTrek visit

The Homework

Two things:

1.  Wear “super blue” to work and on the trail on Monday, March 10. Feel free to visit and grab one of Girl Trek’s beautiful blue “Harriet” t-shirts!

2.  Be prepared to share a favorite Harriet Tubman quote, accomplishment or a personal memory of the first time you learned about Harriet Tubman and how she impacted/impacts you.

There are a couple of entrances to Sibley, so please make sure to note that we are going to meet at the main entrance- the Sibley Staging area which is off Skyline Boulevard. Directions can be found here:

What to Bring
*Proper footwear is a MUST! Please be sure to wear shoes with good ankle support.  We recommend heading to REI and picking up some KEEN footwear!
*Trail Snacks
*Light Jacket/fleece- it will get cooler when the sun goes down!
*Flashlight/head lamp

Please make sure to bring a SIGNED copy of the outdoor afro release so that we can start the hike on time

Hey Zoë - not sure if we can make the start of it, but will you guys come over towards the Old Tunnel Road side?

    • Zoë P.

Hey Kelly- I'd love it if you could make it. We are going to head that way but to be honest how far we go is going to depend on our actual start time and speed! feel free to come out and look for us on the trail.
