MAURICE RIVER BY VICKI S.

SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE RIVER PADDLE. But it’s pronounced like Morris the cat. Meet at Garden Road, south side, we paddle to Union Lake. Pack lunch and hydration; also bug and sun protection. Leader: Vicki S.  (8 5 6 [masked] or [masked]     ravingwriter  @gmail.com

Had several more attendees than rsvp'd. Trip took 2 hours longer than did on 7/4. All conditions the same. Very beautiful day.:

Directions from north are to take 295 south to the right split to 42 freeway East then get left (do not take the split to Delaware Bridge) Once past the split to Delaware, staying on 42, get right for next exit to 55 South. About 1/2 hour down, Look for exit 35A, exit says "Garden Road towards Brotmanville" (west). Meeting place is directly at the end of the ramp. Road crosses river there. Park on shoulder of road. If you need a road break there is a Super Wawa at the exit for 322 just 15 minutes before the Garden Road exit.

River is running at 3.3 at Almond Road dam, about the same as on July 4th trip. No portages that I know of, all obstructions can be paddled around wither to the far left or far right. However will have to adjust for any new conditions we find. Check gauge at

It's going to be a nice day. If this is your first time on this river please be aware there is a lot of over hanging branches and everything in full leaf including poison ivy. For best practice bring a long sleeve shirt and gloves. Have clothes in a dry bag in case you go swimming or flip out of your boat.. Standard safety equipment: rope, whistle, bug spray, rain jacket, etc. Expect the unexpected!

This is an 8 mile trip thru dense forest with a lot of twists and turns in current with additional 2.5 miles of open lake paddling. Obstructions are numerous and as water level decreases this week will become more prevalent. If you are a beginner this trip may not be for you.

Vicki, could you give us an idea on how the river is closer to this date? I would still love to do this kayak trip when it is safer. :-)

OK. Thanks. Are there any trips that would be better for my wife and I?

You should look for a run that is 5 or six miles rather than 10 or 11 that this is. Wading or Oswego.
