Whale Watching! Three hour tour.

I did this last year, shortly after Ed made me an assistant organizer. It was a blast last year. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, charter companies for their whale watching tours. Through the end of this month, whale watching cruises depart from three places. Last year we left at Redondo Beach pier landing, and they seem to be the best price, and probably a little closer to everyone anyways.

Last year we did see a pair of grey whales from a distance, as well as a large pod of common dolphins. There are trained naturalists on board that can teach you about the cetaceans of coastal California, and have binoculars that you can borrow.

Cost is $10/person AS LONG as we get 25 or more people. All I need from you, is a confirmation in your reply that you WILL be there if you RSVP. Otherwise it will be $25/person. You just pay the cruise office when you get there. Its not absolutely essential, but if you can RSVP by Monday, the 25th, that would be great. Again, its 2.5, 3 hours at the most. So you can expect to be back at the pier no later than 1:00.

I chose the 10am tour as it won't kill the whole day for everyone. That means be there at 9:45.

We'll meet at the end of the pier. I believe parking is validated by Voyager Excursions if there is any cost.

Meetup details changed!! Time has changed!!  The whale watching is officially now the 1:30 cruise.  They were sold out and booked solid for the 10:00 ride!  But lots of space on the 1:30 ride.  Thought it would be the other way around.  Everything else is the same.

See you Saturday!

Hey folks! You all seemed so very nice on the whale watch last weekend! I just found out that the wildflowers are blooming in Lancaster. I'd like to go this weekend, before they are killed by a heat wave and would like to carpool. Where do I post that question? What is the appropriate way to go about asking?

There are also lots of other places to go out there: there's a strange and wonderful museum that I think is called the Antelope Valley Museum or something like that. It's a house built into the rocks, was built by an eccentric old Swiss guy early 1900's. The front is a typical Swiss Chalet, but when you go inside, the "house" meanders back through the rocky hillside. There are windows of hand-made glass that are thick and filled with bubbles, a strange path through the rocks in the house, etc. The front room has a high ceiling with stenciled beams. It's full of native american artifacts and is out in the middle of nowhere. Very cool.

Also this month is the annual Poppy Festival in Lancaster-the largest, cleanest and most highly organized outdoor festival I've ever been to. Lots of live music, and I think it's even free. OK, I'll stop babbling now...

It was an amazing whale and dolphin watching experience!
We literally had 4 groups of dolphins come to greet and follow us. We saw hundreds of dolphins and they are absolutely a delight!

We should do this again next year! Thanks, Bob!

Bob, have you reserved at least 25 spots for the 1:30pm ride? This week is the spring break for most schools in L.A., so it might be more crowded than usual weekends.

Maybe send out an email one more time asking people to update their RSVP?

Thanks for organizing this fun event!

Hi Guys, I was one of the naturalists for four years at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and volunteered on the whale watch boats. The season officially ends on March 31, so this is good timing! I won't be able to join you but I know you'll have fun!

Hi, I was a whale watch naturalist for four years with the Cabrillo Aquarium, the same program that the naturalists on this boat are from. They are really well trained and if there are whales or any other marine life there, everyone will learn a lot!
