Wednesday Night Hike for Beginners! – Lake Solitude (Big Cottonwood Canyon)

After several of you talking to me about the possibility of easier hikes, I’ve added the new Wednesday night beginner hiking series. This is going to be a beginner hike designed to prepare you for the longer Monday night hikes and hiking in general.

Directions to Meetup: We will meet at the park and ride located at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon @ 7200 S and Wasatch Blvd and car to the trailhead.

Directions to trailhead: Follow Big Cottonwood Canyon Road (7000 South Wasatch Blvd) to Brighton about 14.2 miles up the canyon to the Silver Lake Visitor's Center. We will park at the Silver Lake Information Center or across the street at the Brighton Store.

Lake Solitude Trail: The trail is 3.5 miles round trip with 500’ of elevation gain.  We will begin at Silver Lake on the Interpretive Trail surrounded by wetlands and soon enter a wooded area which we will hike through to reach Lake Solitude.

Dogs: Are not allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Moose: Be cautious in this area. Do not approach any moose you encounter on or near trails. Moose may seem calm and tame, but they are not! Moose are wild and unpredictable.

Please review the moose safety tips on the below link.

Be prepared: Be sure to carry plenty of water. Additionally please be prepared for the hike, the below link is a good resource for beginners to review before hiking.

After the hike: There will be the option of heading down to the Canyon Inn to socialize by the fire. The Canyon Inn is a bar but there is great pizza and everyone is welcome!

The Canyon Inn is located at 3700 Fort Union Blvd across Wasatch Blvd from the park and ride.

Just had a minor surgery and am on pain meds. If I do make it, just make sure I don’t fall off a cliff!
