Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Congaree National Park

  • Congaree National Park

100 National Park Road, Hopkins, SC (map)

    33.830147 -80.820518

  • We will meet at the visitor's Center. Look for my green cap.
  • This is one of the newest, established as a national park in Nov. 10, 2003, before it used to be a national monument.  Some of the oldest, most majestic trees in SC, are in this park.  People fought extremely hard to save this chunk of land from clear cutting.  Let's go appreciate and explore one of our newest National Parks:

    Check this website: http://www.nps.gov/co....

We can carpool.  Meeting at McDonald's  I-20 EXIT 22 at 8.15AM  This is on Hwy 1 or Columbia Hwy, about 8 miles north of Aiken.

There are many different trails.  We will decide on a trail once we get to the park but we will plan on at least a 2 mile hike with plenty of time to observe, explore and take pictures.

Please bring water, snacks, insect repellent, camera, binoculars, and money for lunch in case we decide to hunt for late lunch around Columbia.   Entrance to the park is free,  quite a great bargain!

As of today, Friday Oct. 11, no development about the government getting on with business. This meet-up will be re-scheduled as soon as we can.

As we all know, the national parks are closed due to the government shut-down. I was hoping it wouldn't last and today is Tuesday, so we will make a decision to re-schedule on Thursday.

Before I commit, are there any chances of some of you all car pooling?

The chances are pretty good. As I said in the intro, we will do a pick-up at E-22 I-20, which is only 10 or 15 m. from Augusta. More people from Augusta may sign up as the day get's closer.

    can I bring my dog?

    September 15, 2013

    • Sharon M.

From their webpage: Dogs are allowed on all trails at Congaree National Park except for the Boardwalk Loop. They are required to be kept on a leash at all times.

Thanks Sharon. The boardwalk is narrow and high traffic. If this is your first time visiting Congaree National Park, you may not want to bring your dog, so you can enjoy the 2 miles of boardwalk! So, I would say, don't bring a dog this time, because we will meet at the Visitor's Center which is the start of the boardwalk, and I think most of us would want to do the boardwalk, with additional spurs if there's consensus.

The trees are outrageous. Hope we can make it to the river! Last time I was there, we saw wild hogs.
