Snowshoeing in Nordmarka

Snowshoeing in the Øyungen - Mellomkollen area

This will be a circular walk. We will take bus 51 until the last stop - Skar - and start snowshoeing from there through the forest. We will walk along the Øyungen lake, cross the Mellomkollen area, enjoy the very pretty view of the Maridalen lake and return to Skar, where we will take the bus back to Oslo.

During the walk we will try to avoid the winter routes where people go cross-country skiing, and take mainly the quiet summer routes.

Distance: around 15km

Time: 5-6 hours

Requirements: Snowshoeing doesn't require any special skills. Even if you are new to it, you should have no problems to do this walk as long as you are moderately fit.

What you need to bring:

- Snowshoes (please check the following link if you are not sure what it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowshoe) and pair of walking/skiing poles.

- Packed lunch.

Hope you can join us!

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get a hold of snowshoes in time for tomorrow's trip. If you guys do something afterward let me know:)

Annette, I don't want to give you false hopes, but I think it is possible to do the trip on crosscountry skis. I don't have snowshoes either, so I'm going to take that chance and go with my "fjellski" with skins. :)

    Hi Antonio,

Unfortunately, I'm not sure you'll be able to hire snowshoes. I've looked on the web before and found only this page on the DNT site (http://english.turistforeningen.no/article.php?ar_id=22035&fo_id=3622) mentioning that Hansi has snowshoes for hire. However, I've contacted them and they never came back to me. In case you want to try your luck too, these are their contact details:
    http://www.hansi.no/contact

Otherwise, if you think snowshoeing is something you would like to do often, XXL has snowshoes for sale from 300 NOK. You'd need to buy poles as well.

    Cheers,
    Marisa

hi ... where can I rent the 'equipment'?

    March 6, 2013

  • Kristiina

Yes, the weather forecast promises excellent weather for Saturday. I'll come :). See you on Saturday!

I meant proper snowshoes like that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowshoe. This is required to walk where we are going.

Ok. I'm in - now that it's this Saturday instead. By snowshoes do you mean like moonboots or Sherocks? I probably have something like that, but otherwise don't have snowshoes.

Snow conditions are still good enough for snowshoeing in Nordmarka. Hope you can join!

  • Kristiina

I would love to join but are the conditions still ok for snowshoeing?

    March 4, 2013

We will follow the summer routes which might be a bit tricky on ski sometimes. But I would not stop anybody to join! I leave to you. :)

Hmm.... I don't have snowshoes (although I could probably borrow some), but what if I joined you on skis? Would that be a too big deviation from the "equipment code" :)
