[[ About ]] [[ House Rules ]] [[ Levels of Play Requirements ]]Teams consist of 3–5 players (teams are comprised based on a random count-off system)
There are different "house rules" all over Orlando, so we abide by the best & most important.
While we encourage competitiveness, we don't let it get in the way of the greater objective:
HAVE FUN & BE SAFE:
Serving team rotates after 5 consecutive serves (both teams rotate if extra players are sidelined)
When serving, loudly call the score (or call out "service")
No players under 18* (for safety reasons) (but 10-year-old ball chasers are welcome!)
Co-ed usually requires that a female must play one of the 3 hits - we don't require that, but male ball hogging will be called if excessive & avoidable
There is no 10-foot line. Sets to the 3rd hit may go to any player anywhere on the court.
Clockwise side-out/rotation only. At the net, you may switch the setter (before the serve) as long as everyone on the team agrees & fully understands. No fancy rotations adapted from indoor rules.
Server may step out of the serving zone lengthwise (for jump serves, etc.) but may not serve from the free zones to the right or left.
At no time will there be more than FIVE players on court. Teams with more than 5 players must rotate players in/out on the side (either side – both sides if 7 or more players). Sand vball is too crowded & unsafe for 6 or more players.
Strive for 3 hits per side (no ball hogging)
2nd hit always goes to the setter (unless setter calls for "help") - this avoids injuries
Adapt to player levels. Power hitters may hit downward spikes, but should keep it to a minimum depending on opposing team's skill level.
co-ed random team selection: line up by gender, stand next to teammates from previous game, & count off
Call your own fouls/faults (such as touching the net, palming the ball, etc.)
When a foul is in dispute, replay the ball.
OFFICIAL RULE VARIATIONS
NEVER BLOCK or ATTACK THE SERVE - our version of "attack" includes INTENTIONALLY sending the ball over in one hit on the serve, even if it's a bump (official rules only specify making contact above the net's plane)
While we discourage kicking, it is legal to kick the ball when it's the only option as long as it is part of a 2- or 3-hit play. No one-hit kick-overs.
Blocking does NOT count as one of the 3 hits - call "touch" when you block
Dinking is allowed, though players should strive to make it closed hand to conform to official tipping rules
OFFICIAL RULES REITERATED
You must be 100% sure that a portion of the ball has crossed the net's plane to your side before you initiate any kind of hit (you can follow through across the plane, but initial contact must begin on your side)
Blocking is a response hit, & while you may cross the net's plane to block, you may not contact the ball until the opponent has initiated contact
If you touch the net as part of a play, or in a way that interferes with the play, the point goes to the opponent (ball remains in play if the net was pushed into you by the opposing team or wind)
See Official Rules (which are meant for teams of 2)
A couple notes:
Arguments happen. That's OK. Let's keep it light. If you don't like the house rules, you're welcome to express your opinion in a respectful manner. If the organizer(s) overrules, please abide. Further debate can be continued later off court or online. We're open to making adjustments to the above rules & guidelines when necessary.
Most rules are for safey &/or to discourage individual behavior that benefits one at the expense of others. Players are at all levels, & we intend for everyone to have fun. Therefore, some players, usually at higher levels, must be prepared to make a few adjustments. Players with lower skills will improve with encouragement & time. A good attitude goes a LONG way.
*If accompanied by an adult, players under 18 may participate only if deemed (by the organizer on site) to be skilled enough & physically strong enough to play without getting hurt or causing injury to others.
Generally, it is simply best not to include anyone under 18.
