This will be a recurring monthly event on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Lets all get together and catch up, talk about things we've been doing or are interested in.
Folks are encouraged to set up smaller events before or after to get out and do something before or after with members of the group.
This location has worked well for us, so I figure we'll stick with it. There is a $5 event cost to get some kind of space reserved for us and to try to keep the RSVP count accurate. The money will go to appetizers and such for the group which I will pay to the venue, I'm not making $$ off this, just want to be sure we have a good space.
Given that the group is so large, please check in with me when you arrive so I can keep track of who has attended. Those that don't change their RSVP and don't attend, well, we can't keep that up now can we?
This will be a social event for us to all meet each other. I have some ideas on how to kick-start this a little, which I will send out before the event. A few of the things we'll do are:
a) wear nametags, so we know who in the place is with the group and who isn't
b) wear some "flare" (we're over 40, right, remember flare?), that represents things you'd enjoy talking about. Into travel? - how about an airplane? Like jazz? - a saxophone. Etc. Can be an actual pin or button, clip art or drawn on a 3x5 card, just something to help us all get the conversation flowing
c) due to the size of the group, I'm going to work out a way to "rotate" around a little so that more of us get a chance to meet. This is another reason you'll need to check in with me. (no, we won't be playing musical chairs) - For the first meeting things were flowing pretty well so I didn't do this - will this time if it seems like we need a bit of a shuffle.
I want this to be a fun, casual event for everyone.
I will have "idea jars" for things to do and a way to "vote" for what you'd like to see us do next.
I apologize in advance if this venue isn't the ideal environment for some people's taste or preferences. "Surprisingly", it is hard to find a cafe or a coffee shop to camp out for 2-3 hours on a Saturday when the group could be 50-100 people.
Please let me know if you have any ideas, suggestions or questions. Look forward to meeting everyone.
Please use the following discussion thread to discuss ridesharing, which is encouraged. That way, not everyone signed up gets an email as people try and coordinate. If you are coming from somewhere outside SF and can offer a ride, you are encouraged to check this thread.
If you are getting a lot of email as people RSVP, you can turn this off under "Email Preferences" under My Profile at the top of the group page. I can't turn this off group-wide.
