Rock Climbing with Going Vertical Climbing Club

Our group is invited to join Going Vertical Climbing Club.

Hi! My name is Laurie, I'm the organizer of Going Vertical Climbing Club and we're inviting you for our May "Be Our Guest Climb" at Vertical Rock Indoor Climbing Center in Manassas. You'll get to use our membership discount ($2 off the day pass and a FREE harness rental) and members from our group will show you the ropes. That means we'll do all your knots, show you the safety checks, give you the basic intro to how to rock climb, and be your belayer (that's the person with their hand on the other end of the rope holding the brakes!)

Rock climbing is one of the safest sports there is, and it's not about arm muscles-- it's about engaging your whole body and your  mind. Dress workout comfortable, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for a great time with a friendly community. We love introducing new people to the sport and hope you'll come out to Vertical Rocks to Be Our Guests!

For those of you who were interested in real rock climbing, here is an area Meetup group that does that: http://www.meetup.com/rockclimbing-62/

Thanks Laurie for setting this up. It was a lot of fun and the group there was friendly and helpful. Hope to do it again some time.

If you all ever plan a time for the weekend, let me know. Would love to have my daughter come and try it.

Outstanding! Thanks so much to Laurie and all her 'regular meetup' volunteer belayers whose enthusiasm and coaching made all the difference.

Great fun. I hope you do it again. (regret I was so intent on climbing I missed most of the group, though I saw one i was quite happy to see again.)

I'm excited to see so many new faces joining us on the rocks! When you arrive at Vertical Rock on Wednesday, please tell the desk staff that you are with "the meetup." They'll get you all set up with gear, and point us out to you -- I usually dress fairly florescently so I should be easy to spot! If you have any questions in the meantime, I'm happy to help!

Boots or running shoes? (stiff sole for edges or soft sole for contour and stick?)

I actually highly recommend renting the actual climbing shoes which have extra friction-y rubber and contour (magic tree frog feet), but of those two choices running shoes are the better option.

I will be driving from NW DC 9Van Ness area) if someone in the area or along the route wants a ride. Not sure whether through town or out River Road and around beltway - either one is a tough slog that time of day....

Laurie, do you ever do actual rock-climbing -- on real rocks, as opposed to a synthetic surface in a gym?

On a personal basis? Yes, about once a week. With Going Vertical Climbing Club? We haven't in the past, there's a ton of logistics to work out, but we're piloting our first one May 11, and hoping to do one or two a month if it goes well.

Laurie - This sounds like a great opportunity to be vertical. What is the total cost per person for the event for adults as well as for minors? Thanks.

Great questions! It's $16 for the day pass + free harness combo (usually $18 pass + $5 harness rental, but we got your back!). You can also rent climbing shoes for $5 if you want a little boost (they have extra sticky rubber on them, but aren't technically necessary.) The group itself usually climbs 2-3 hours a night, mixing socializing with working out.

So it is $16 total for adults for the period that one is inside the facility. Thanks.
